Restaurants & Food / Re: Bagels?
« on: May 05, 2014, 09:28:59 AM »
Bagel House is my favorite in Jackson Heights. Out of the neighborhood, I'm a fan of Lot's Bagels in Astoria, but I'm also not willing to travel too far for bagels... Bagel House has good, hand rolled, boiled bagels.

There's a jeweler across from Table Wine (I think it's called Alisa and Sofia's Jewelry) where I had some necklaces fixed and my engagement ring cleaned. Their prices were reasonable and they were very nice. I think they could do it.

they are open only as long as they expect to sell food. If they get busier, they'll be open longer.

Jeff said this in July, so I believe that it was only a short term thing, unless it was magically crazy successful with no effort beyond cooking.

Restaurants & Food / Re: Rainbow Berry Frozen Yogurt

I've been there 3 times, and been happy all three times. I'm checking out all the flavors. And last time I had to figure out what the difference was between cake batter and birthday cake ;) I liked the one that was white and not yellow better.

A bit further abroad, but also very good, is the ice cream place by the new kid's play space on 37th and 94th. It's called Selatto. It's more of a traditional they-serve-you place, but the servings are generous and a small was only $2. They have mostly ice cream, a few sorbets, and 1 fat free frozen yogurt (they might have soft serve too). I got the chocolate hazelnut and it was delicious. The weird thing about them is that they share the space with an eyeglasses store.

It is the same space Papa's was in. My dad is obsessed with the cuban sandwich at papa's, and the non-empanada menu seems to have stayed the same.

We went on a Sunday, maybe an hour before closing (thy close early on Sundays). The brisket and soft shelled crabs were excellent, and they gave us one leftover chicken! The duck was good too, but I don't know if I'd order it again.

Neighborhood Chat / Re: 78-23 37th Ave previously NOVO?
« on: May 28, 2013, 08:59:24 PM »
I just sent an email to the folks that run Owl's Head in Bay Ridge. I feel like our neighborhood is a similar market (not too trendy, diverse, with a base of middle-class people who would patronize a slightly nicer/upscale bar), so I asked if they had ever considered the neighborhood and gave them the address of the now defunct Novo. So fingers crossed... if you can think of anyone else who might be a potential for that space, email them. Right? Couldn't hurt to be proactive!

One of my students lost her dog this weekend. I don't know the type, but I'll have her send you an email if that's okay.

Restaurants & Food / Best buffalo wings?
« on: February 01, 2013, 09:59:32 PM »
We're looking for wings for the game on Sunday. I'm personally rooting for UFC, but I think my husband is hoping for a more traditional buffalo wing. So,which pizza place, diner or chinese food joint serves the best hot wings? And hopefully delivers?

Thanks!

I tip around $3 dollars (they've done a good job consolidating their boxes- there used to be too many). They send free delivery codes via email regularly if you order from them which is nice (though if you go a couple of weeks without ordering the codes stop appearing for awhile). Some of their fruit is overpackaged, but I'm happy with them. There's some things that you can get cheaper if you look, but I think overall they're cheaper than Walbaums, (I once did a side by side comparison between FD and PeaPod, and was impressed with how well FD came out) and have good, varied products.

Two things:
-Review your order to make sure that you don't have doubles of anything. Sometimes I put things in my cart, continue shopping, and forget that I got something, order it again, and then miss that I have multiples.

- Look at Presidents Picks and Grocery Deals for stuff on sale. Some of the sales are really good, especially for end of season fruit.
