Looks like the plaza re-paving is about halfway done with concrete diagonal rectangles replacing the old blacktop. I took a photo which I'll attempt to attach. After I took the photo someone cursed me out, so there's that.

Why did they curse you out?

Colored concrete with an interesting design. Unfortunately in one year it will all be dark with grease and dirt. Hey, at least we got new sidewalks! Too bad we can’t get new sidewalks on 37th Ave.

Hmm, I wonder if any thought was put in by the city in how to maintain the clean appearance of the new surfaces.  Perhaps they'll need to use high pressure washers to keep them clean.

Seriously! I am looking forward to seeing how the plaza turns out. I'm confident it will constitute an improvement, even if it's not everything it might have been.  Public spaces can develop in surprising ways as people start to use them.

I walked by this evening and it seems to be moving along quickly now. I'm guessing it will be finished by this summer. It will be so nice to have trees there!

Too bad we didn’t get pavers like Manhattan did. This concrete with absorb stains and will have to be power washed regularly to be kept clean. Trees will be nice except they usually plant two year old skinny trees.

I walked by last night also.  The red split really pops on those new white pavers.   It will  be gross, but at least it will be nicer then what it was.  But at the end of the day at least we got some $ to spend in our hood, so that’s good.

Two-year old skinny trees?! LOL, That's not true at all. What are you basing that on? Two year old trees would rarely survive as street trees. Before you point out some newly planted trees by the city that you saw die, obviously when you are dealing with plants some die. The city does a great job at keeping that at a minimum.

Here's some info about how NYC street trees a procured:

And here's an image of a young girl standing next to a two-year old apple tree:

Those trees that the city plants grow faster. I have actually planted some trees in NYC and worked with Forestry in Queens. The tree planted has to have a 2in diameter at the base of the tree. The bigger trees cost more. They plant the tree that just meets that requirement.

Wishful thinking....Sad indeed that the city couldn't do more to provide for a more beautiful plaza.  I just hope that it'll be properly maintained....

For the area to be maintained will involve merchants taking ownership of the immediate environs.  Time will tell but it seems highly unlikely especially when one considers sanitation conditions on 74 and 73 streets.  Particularly disheartening are the relatively newly installed tree surrounds which are filled with garbage/food,  many of which are already knocked down.
