Fact: NYC has been caught paying rent for apartments in Binghamton NY for one year in advance and then moved people to these apartments in order to get rid of them. This was organized by the mayor’s social workers. The scheme has been discovered and is said to be illegal. These people only quality if they don’t have jobs and are in need or receive public housing. I have no idea what color, religion, gender, sexual orientation these people are. It happened and now is the subject of an investigation to see who authorized it.

I remember reading about this.  Seems like a horribly conceived plan to me.  Notice how people were basically shipped off to Binghamton vs Southampton.  Who made that decision #nimby

Looks like the moderators who probably at the urging of Dromm have started to engage in censorship. Where are my poll results?

[Moderators note: When we merged this thread with the previous thread on Diversity Plaza, the topic ID number changed, and the poll results must have been reset as a result.   This was unintentional, and we apologize.]

Your poorly conceived or biased poll is right up top, with access to results.

^Indeed, I haven't participated in your poll because, as previously stated, it is poorly conceived or biased.

Note how the poll gives no option for a "no" that isn't specifically about viewing it as a waste of taxpayer money or too filled with undesirable people. For example, no consideration that someone who lives on say, 89th & 34th Avenue might view the plaza itself favorably but wouldn't really plan to use it since that's a big enough distance from the Plaza to make it unlikely someone would use it. Note also how the poll includes a "Yes" answer that is not related to the actual question of the poll itself (walking by the plaza is not using the facilities, just like my walking by the jewelry stores on 74th street does not make me a patron).

I am free to criticize your poorly thought out poll, and perhaps if that ruffles your feathers, you should revisit your decision to post a poll.

Perhaps you points are irrelevant and pointless. You seem to search for reasons to argue why this poll is not scientific enough yet you don’t create your own scientific poll. You deserve to demoted to sergeant Flannel.

the last option is an odd one ... "i won't use this facility because it was too expensive" doesn't seem like an answer anyone would give without prompting. i voted for the first, and i can understand the second and third, but that last one? would those who chose that use diversity plaza if it cost three million in tax dollars? two million? $247.84?

^yep that's people choosing ideology over the practical, which reflects the bias of those who select that answer and the person who wrote the poll. "I'll be darned if I'll ever sit there! Do you know how much that thing that's already been created and right in front of me to use if I could just get over my ideological purism cost!"

As an aside, though perhaps relevant, I kind of thought the plazas at the 46th street and 40th street stations on the 7 under the train were stupid when they were proposed. I thought, who is going to sit there with traffic whizzing by on both sides from Queens Blvd? Turns out they are a good spot to meet someone (and under cover from the rain), and while I'm never going to go there to sit expressly to read the paper and have a cup of coffee, they do serve a purpose.

5 Million is not even that much for the city. It's good we are getting some dollars for it. Also, they don't want to be embarrassed by putting good money into a bad spot, so they'll probably give it more attention now too.

You are kidding yourself if you think 5 million is a good deal for repaving sidewalks a street and some water main replacement. It is a total ripoff that should cost no more 1 million. NYC will not go bankrupt over this expenditure but shows how out of control union prevailing wage and benefits are.

^Can you please show the announcement that reduced the scope of work for the project to only new sidewalks and water main replacement? Or are you deliberating misleading?

When the project was announced a couple of years ago, the scope of work included raising the plaza to sidewalk level, bike racks, benches, trees, and changes to lighting.

I have no idea if $5 million is too much for the project. But it does appear that you are over-simplifying the work that is going on there, JK Resident.

During my first experience with participatory budgeting, I was astounded with the cost of some projects that seemed to be fairly simple. $5 million seems about right for the scope of this project. Whether things should cost what they cost is another conversation, but this is not outrageous in terms of other capital projects in the city.

Participatory budgeting? Well you don’t live in Dromm’s district of Jackson Heights who doesn’t believe in this form of direct democracy. No, he and he only decides where the money gets spent with no input from the residents. That’s why he decided to waste 5 million on this project. The reason it seems about right is you have no idea how much construction really costs. A tree costs $500, benches $2000 tops, no were near over $50,000 for all these items.

Have you ever spoken to Dromm about PB? I have. He's supportive of the idea. It's more about finding the staff resources to take it on. His office spends a lot of time on constituent services, including referrals from other council members. Additionally, I heard from NY senate staffers that representatives in neighborhoods with a large immigrant population are often hesitant about PB, worried that the immigrant community will be under represented in terms of constituent ideas and voting. Dromm echoed similar concerns, and if you think about it, more staff time would have to be devoted to increasing awareness amongst that population.

Do you watch those house flipping shows that only quote the cost of material and think $6000 is about how much you'll have to pay to gut your kitchen, move the water and gas lines, get custom cabinets, and quartz counter tops?
