Trying not to be gloomy about this - and hope it will get better with time, but sure does seem like an incredible waste of money and time for an underwhelming space.

the helpful improvements -- some art, a little fencing -- would be relatively cheap, so i'm hopeful they can happen.

There should have at least been some sort of water feature or center piece for that money.  Just rode my bike to see Gantry. It's amazing what they accomplished there. Really disappointed at the finished project here and as I said before , I think I was a big rip off.

I have also been to GANTRY PARK recently and it's amazing and creative.

I was also excited to see the results of the year of work on Diversity Plaza.

DIVERSITY PLAZA seems to be what was there before.  Only with 7 more straggly trees.
And some diamond shaped planters.

At least the pots with plants that were there before broke up the continuous asphalt.  Even the curb that existed previously created a more interesting terrain.

Who designed Diversity Plaza?

It is the most terrible insult that exists in design.

It is, alas, "boring".

And thus alienating for people to hang out in..

What a wasted opportunity.

It seems like there are really good ideas on this board for cheap potential improvements to Diversity Plaza—small things that would make a big difference.

Does anyone know who the appropriate public official is to contact with these ideas, who might be able to see if any of these changes could actually be made (or considered)? Dromm?

Have to agree here. The money spent to make the road higher to meet the curb seems ridiculous for how plain and
uninviting it STILL is. A real head scratcher on whose committee's or whatever looked at this plan and ok'd it. A true
waste compared to Gantry Park, the new Domino Park, countless other plazas in the city.

Why do we always get the generic version of any civic thing around here if we get it at all?
 Still mostly male, BTW.

I hate to be negative about efforts to make improvements... but..
The real tragedy ti ne is that whatever money is spent to create something won't matter in weeks or months
due to the fact that nothing in the city is maintained,
from basic garbage collection to repairing dead trees, etc.  That area doesn't have a BID either... so it's not like the area businesses care about
taking care of things outside of their front doors.
Maybe that filing cabinet guy can move other there and create a virtual bazaar of used 1980s
office furniture.

gantry park is 12 acres, domino park six acres. both abut the water, which opens up the space.

more could be done with diversity plaza, to be sure, but comparing it to those is like comparing apples and chicken wings.

Something like this would be nice.

That's exactly what I mean.  The plaza in Manhattan looks GREAT.

It's worth recognizing that not all NYC plazas are the same. Several plazas in Manhattan, for instance, are managed and financed by the local Business Improvement District. That means that if your plaza's BID includes Macy's or the Flatiron Building and the surrounding real estate, your plazas are going to have a massive infusion of corporate capital aimed at beautifying that area to serve their business. It's not fair to compare Diversity Plaza to those. That does not mean that it cannot be an attractive place. It's just important to recognize that in a neighborhood like Jackson Heights, the capital improvements are going to be fairly standard fare -- how the plaza is programmed or maintained is up to you and me and any partners we choose to bring in.

If you want to plan an event, you can email diversityplazajh@gmail.com
It's definitely a blank space. Also, it has no private partnerships to help fund anything. No domino development and no BID. We have to make this space for ourselves. 5 million seems like a lot to us but the way I see it is that the government is putting an investment in the area and they are going to want to see the investment pay off. We aren't going to see a ferris wheel anytime soon, or probably any furniture that is going to make a difference. You should make it your own in your own way. If you would like to get involved with the plaza, email the address above.

I have also complained many times to 311 about the cabinet guys and have emailed Dromms office. The laws they are breaking are:

Items on the street, not on a table
Blocking sidewalk, not 8 feet of room to walk
Too wide set-up
