We'd be happy to - one of our cats recently passed on and his housemate is clearly lonely. But was just trying to determine whether he was just out for a stroll and really lives in one of those houses.

I did ask a woman coming out of one of the homes there and she said there are strays walking about that block. Always sad to see, especially with the worst of winter weather still on the way.

There's a friendly male orange tabby on 76th street.  seems slightly agitated and too clean for a stray so wondering if this is a lost cat.

I think the biggest problem is a lack of common knowledge of the traffic laws for bicycles. The really do occupy a unique space somewhere between motor vehicles and pedestrians, so it logically follows they should have a unique set of rules...and, in fact, they do.

The trouble is, these rules are not widely known, so it logically follows that they are not commonly obeyed, or enforced. Most people I speak to have no clue what cyclists are supposed to do (or not do) in any given scenario.  I'm talking about cyclists and non-cyclists. That's a recipe for failure, if not disaster, imho.

In my unscientific observation, as a life-long NY pedestrian, motorist since I was 17 - and bike commuter for over 30 years - cyclists are no more unlawful or hazardous than cars or pedestrians - they're merely the 'new kids on the block.' As the hot new, rapidly growing trend in urban planning, their presence (along with new bike infrastructure), for good or bad, is more noticeable today than the presence - and daily illegal behaviors - we're all accustomed to from pedestrians and motorists.

I predict in 25-50 years bikes will be a much more widely used form of transit in NYC and most of the bugs will be worked out by then. Keep in mind, when cars were introduced here a century ago, their integration with foot and horse-drawn traffic was not an immediate success.

Has anyone ever used this spot? We were searching for a very local place to get massage and reflexology. Tired of going into Manhattan and spending top dollar ($150ish for and hour of Swedish or Shaitsu, etc.).

We did find a few comparably priced places in Woodside, etc. but would love to support a legitimate business within walking distance of home.  We're doing the Sri Chimnoy race this weekend and would love to have an appointment on the way home from FMCP!

I hate being a fear mongerer, but awful incidents like this one remind us how we need to stay vigilant. One thing I'd suggest is to be careful about using headphones and ear buds, especially when walking alone. It reduces your ability to hear in your environment (e.g. if someone comes up behind you), which in turn can impact your safety.

It's no guarantee, of course, but anything you can do to keep safe is a plus.

Neighborhood Chat / 2015 Ghost Bike Ride - save the date! 4/19
« on: April 01, 2015, 08:44:14 AM »
Hi all

Just wanted to give a heads up for this annual ride which covers the five boroughs to pay respects to cyclists who've died in the previous year.  2015 marks the tenth anniversary of Street Memorials' rides in NYC, so if you've never done one of these, this is a good one to get in on.

The ride will be Sunday, April 19.  There are several rides running simultaneously in each borough, and they have different starting times between 9 AM and 12 noon. All rides converge around 4:30 PM on the final bike; this year that will be near city hall.  There is usually an after-spot, and there are tons of train options there if you'd rather take it easy going home.

There will be two rides in Queens this year, a longer one which runs from NW Queens south nearly to the Nassau County border & back.  I'll be leading the shorter Queens ride which will focus around Flushing Meadows Corona Park, and then work its way through Roosevelt Island heading back to Manhattan.

This is a slow, respectful and law-abiding ride. Not a race, not a provocative critical mass type thing. It's essentially to raise awareness for traffic hazards, advocate for safer conditions and primarily, to honor the casualties of 2014. You can expect to see media coverage, as well as involvement of families and friends of the fallen riders. Without question, it's a very important and emotional event.

Here is the main web page with the basics on the event: http://ghostbikes.org/events

More details will be added as we finalize the schedule of each ride.

I'll be co-leading the Queens leg of this year's 9th Annual Memorial Ride and Walk, on Sunday, April 6, 2014 (Rain Date is the following Sunday, April 13).

We will meet at Diversity Plaza at 12 noon, and then ride to the official start at 94th St. & Liberty Ave. by 1 PM.

This is a slow-paced, respectful ride to raise awareness and pay tribute to traffic casualties over the last year. Bike riders of all levels are most welcome, and there are segments for pedestrians as well.

The full schedule is here: http://ghostbikes.org/node/1036

Please note there are simultaneous rides in different boroughs, which all converge near the Williamsburg Bridge in Brooklyn at 4:30 PM.

The Annual Memorial Ride and Walk brings New Yorkers together to remember pedestrians and cyclists killed in our city over the past year. This will mark the ninth year that this event has occurred. Riders will visit the site of each ghost bike, a white-painted memorial for cyclists, installed since 2013. Please help us show solidarity with the family and friends of those lost by joining us for this important event. Bring flowers and other items to honor those lost.. The ride has been growing each year and with the rising accident figures, it's important to show unity and support for the safety of all, as well as sympathy for the loved ones of the casualties.

Hope to see you out there on the 6th.

We no longer have our Ikea Ektorp love seat, so we are selling two slip covers we bought as spares. The asking price is $100.00.

They are a cotton blend, and are machine washable:

1 Dark ("Idemo") Blue, BRAND NEW, NEVER USED, still sealed in original packaging!

1 Light ("Svanby") green, lightly used condition. There are a few small stains and blemishes but this is a good spare for when you want to launder your other ones or just want a change of color.

The colors can be seen here: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S09932592/

One new slipcover will cost you $150 plus shipping/tax at Ikea so, for a new one AND an extra in excellent shape, this is a great deal.

These come from a smoke-free home; we are a married couple with no children, so our furniture stays in pretty nice condition.

Please feel free to email with any questions.

We are selling an Ikea IVAR shelf unit with 20" Deep center section, and 12" angled sides.  We are asking $100.00

It consists of:

- a center section with five deep shelves (19 5/8" deep, 35" wide) - this unit alone sells for $83 new http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S29896362/

- left and right side sections with angled shelves (these are a great size which was discontinued and are no longer available at Ikea); these side shelves are 16" wide, left to right. They narrow in depth (front-to-rear) from 19 5/8" at the inner part to 11 3/4" at the outer edges, and have 12" deep uprights at each end. These uprights cost $12 each new, not counting the angled shelves - we are including five angled shelves for each side (ten angled shelves total).
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/73755709/#/83756609

Essentially the asking price is less than what you'd pay for the center section and two 12" deep uprights, plus we are throwing in 10 angled shelves (which are no longer available from Ikea) for free.

Also included are the pegs for supporting the shelves (fully adjustable in height, just move the pegs up or down as desired). and a steel center brace which screws into the rear of the center uprights (you'll just need to supply your own four wood screws and a screwdriver for this). Assembly and shelf height adjustment is super fast and easy.

The entire unit is very sturdy and made of solid pine, which looks great as is, or is ready for stain or paint, if you prefer. The height of the uprights is 70" (5' 10").
