Neighborhood Chat / Re: 34th Avenue street closure permanently (NOT)
« on: October 27, 2020, 12:12:26 PM »
Is there going to be a hearing on this for all of Jackson Heights to weigh in on? Funny that they wouldn't wait for a non-pandemic time to evaluate this one.

Open Streets will be one of several items on the agenda when Community Board 3 holds a Traffic and Transportation Committee Meeting via Teleconference on Wednesday, October 28, 2020 at 6:30pm.

Neighborhood Chat / RIP Crocker

Posting this here for those who may have known him or his family.

Wikipedia states his father worked at Our Lady of Fatima school. If you watched Kojak, you may recall Telly Savalas occasionally making mentions of Jackson Heights, which was apparently written into the character Background of Detective Crocker.

Neighborhood Chat / Re: 34th Avenue Closing

This appears to have been extended through Sunday April 5th, but wondering whether that will be updated, as the virus news regarding staying home changes daily. Any reliable updates are welcome here. This was the latest I could find:

Neighborhood Chat / Re: Local tailor/leatherwork recommendation?
« on: October 29, 2019, 12:50:56 PM »
Many tailors won't/can't work on leather as it requires heavy equipment with strong needles. For a minor repair you could try a local shoe repair shop. I had the cobbler near the post office sew up some pocket lining holes in a motorcycle jacket (fabric needed resewing to the leather edges); price was very reasonable, but results were only fair.

If it was a major job, or if it's a jacket of great worth (financial or sentimental) I'd suggest using one of the specialty shops in Manhattan. Here's one: http://6avenuetailor.com/leather-suede-fur-and-sherling-alteration/

Why aren't all the scheduled parades listed on the Community Board 3 website?

They are, on the Calendar pages.

Helmets are always advisable!

Because many people ask this all the time, here is the official word from the NYC DOT web site:

In New York State, all bicyclists under the age of 14 years old are required to wear safety certified bicycle helmets when they are operators or passengers on bicycles (Sec. 1238(5)). Children aged 1 to 4 must wear certified bicycle helmet and ride in specially designed child safety seats.

In other words, cyclists or passengers on a bike who are 14 and older are not required by law to wear a helmet. Under 14, you must.

Some other helmet facts:

* Helmets (regardless of price) should have a sticker inside stating they have passed national safety regulations. Expensive helmets usually cost more because they are lighter (less fatiguing on long rides, easier to look around at traffic, etc.), have better ventilation (cooler in hot weather), are more comfortable (better cushion pads and strap systems) or might be considered more attractively designed.

* Helmets have a shelf life. The date of manufacture is usually stamped inside. If your helmet is more than 2-3 years old, you should replace it. If your helmet suffers a considerable knock (this includes dropping it really hard on the floor from a balcony, down a flight of stairs, etc.) you should replace it, regardless of its age.

* Helmets are useless if they do not fit properly, are not worn properly (people seem to wear them backwards sometimes) or adjusted incorrectly (again, better helmets usually have better strap adjustments).

* The DOT gives away helmets free to the public several times a year. They offer children's and adult sizes. Check their website for dates in your area.

Neighborhood Chat / Re: Need tailor to alter mens suit
« on: April 28, 2018, 07:07:13 AM »
I had a bad first experience at Raymond's and will not go back - disappointing, since they are close by. But others have had good luck there, so I'd still tell others to give them a try...but start with an easy inexpensive repair (inexpensive clothing).  They kinda ruined a pair of brand new chinos, although I bought them at an outlet, so my loss was small.

There are other folks in the nabe who've gotten good reviews, but I've not tried them. One is a tiny storefront in the low 80s (sorry, I forget the exact block), just south of Roosevelt (west side of the block). Easy to spot if you walk there - just a tiny room off the street with lots of clothes and a sewing machine. Supposedly cheap and very good.

A little more pricey and further away but excellent in my experience is this guy who works out of his home in Astoria. Not a far walk off the Q/N line. Yelp reviews explain you need to call him, etc. but in my experience, going there about half a dozen times, he was very reliable about meeting times, completion dates and easy to connect with. His work was super professional quality. For a nice quality suit you want done right, I'd go there.  I've paid two-three times as much in Brooklyn and four times the $ in Manhattan and his work was better than theirs imo.
