Hi all
Just wanted to give a heads up for this annual ride which covers the five boroughs to pay respects to cyclists who've died in the previous year. 2015 marks the tenth anniversary of Street Memorials' rides in NYC, so if you've never done one of these, this is a good one to get in on.
The ride will be Sunday, April 19. There are several rides running simultaneously in each borough, and they have different starting times between 9 AM and 12 noon. All rides converge around 4:30 PM on the final bike; this year that will be near city hall. There is usually an after-spot, and there are tons of train options there if you'd rather take it easy going home.
There will be two rides in Queens this year, a longer one which runs from NW Queens south nearly to the Nassau County border & back. I'll be leading the shorter Queens ride which will focus around Flushing Meadows Corona Park, and then work its way through Roosevelt Island heading back to Manhattan.
This is a slow, respectful and law-abiding ride. Not a race, not a provocative critical mass type thing. It's essentially to raise awareness for traffic hazards, advocate for safer conditions and primarily, to honor the casualties of 2014. You can expect to see media coverage, as well as involvement of families and friends of the fallen riders. Without question, it's a very important and emotional event.
