Hair and Nail Salons
« on: November 04, 2007, 09:29:45 AM »
I've been going to Gulzar Beauty Salon, 74th and Roosevelt, for traditional eyebrow threading for several months. For the price $5 and the efficiency you can't beat this place. I really enjoy the no frills yet all business approach. No appointment necessary and I've only had to wait, for literally one minute at most, before a chair opened up and I was taken care of in five minutes. The women who work there are nice and the place is clean enough. Before moving here I used to go to a swanky threading place in SoHo where I thought it was a deal at $25, but no more. Gulzar may not have the trendy scene of a Manhattan spa, but it's the place for me to get what I need.

Hope other people can check it out.

Anyone recommend a place for pedicures?

I also enjoy Nila's Eyebrow located next to Italian Farms on the corner of 80th St and 37th Ave.  78 Nail Spa (on 78th St) and Susanna's (on 81st and 37th Ave) offer good pedicures.

need recommendation for hairdresser
« Reply #3 on: November 27, 2007, 07:28:27 PM »
I need a haircut and this time I want to stay close to home.  Does anyone have any recommendations for stylists or salons in the area for a cut and blowdry?  And if you know the approx. cost that would be great too.

I have long straight hair and usually stay pretty low-key when choosing a style (like long layers or something like that).

thanks.

there's a guy named Andres at Xtreme Designs (don't let the name dissuade you).  He's great, doesn't speak much English, though. Bring a picture!  I don't know the price of haircuts, as he does my highlights, but he does my dh's hair for $20.  Really, though, I promise he is really good.  I no longer shell out the big bucks for highlighting!  It's on 37th and 89th, I think (near the pet store).

Anybody have a favorite place for pedicures in the neighborhood? I'm trying the new Ingrid's tomorrow so will report in after that but would love to find out about other favorite pedi places.

Esthetiques ~ 718-478-3258, either Yola or Assia. You need an appointment, and they are closed Sunday and Monday. Best pedicure around, about $24.

i am pretty loyal to Spa Belagio on Roosevelt between 74th and 75th.  you are best to go on a week day or early on a weekend because they're pretty popular.  i also have Anthony there cut my hair.

Could somebody please help enlighten the ignorant, and explain to me what eyebrow threading is, and why we have such an amazing concentration of shops that provide this service?

Todd, eyebrow threading is a dipilitory (sp?) technique whereby hairs along the eyebrow line are removed using thread and a twisting motion rather than the more conventional methods like waxing or tweezing.  Threading is quicker and if done correctly, beautifully sculpts the eyebrows.  It's a traditional method that is popular in India, perhaps this explains its popularity in Jackson Heights.  I've had this done twice, and on each occasion, my eyebrows looked amazing.

Waxing?
« Reply #12 on: January 09, 2008, 11:03:21 AM »
I've seen lots of posts on threading, but not much on waxing.

Are there any good (inexpensive) waxing places in the area?  Specifically a place that does a good Brazilian.

I know there are quite a few places in the city, but it seems hard to find anything elsewhere.

I've heard that the Beauty and Youth Spa in Chelsea does one for $25 which seems too good to be true.  Has anyone been there?

Thanks!

hi, jessieboo!

1) yes, i've actually been to the "beauty and youth spa" and consequently almost lodged a law suit on them cuz they ripped off my skin

2) go to NaturaSpa on Steinway in Astoria - not Jackson Heights, but conveniently off the R or Vat Steinway - it's by the Victoria's Secret there.  Ask for Irina - she is AMAZING!  $30  their number is 718-956-5530 and they are at 31-24 Steinway St www.naturaspany.com

Thanks so much for the recommendation.  I'll let you know how it goes.

I also appreciate the heads up on Beauty and Youth...i suspected it might be too good to be true.  I'll pay the extra $5 to keep my skin.   :)
