I love Jolla at Shear Success.  She used to own Esthetiques and when the rent got too high, she moved to Shear Success with Assia.  They're both terrific.  Jolla is deaf but reads lips.  Shear Success is not as nice looking as I'd like but Jolla and Assia do great waxing, mani/pedis, Jolla gives really good inexpensive facials etc.  On 37th Ave. about 85th Street.

Isabel at Isabel's salon on 37th Ave. bet. 77/76 Street.  Not expensive but can't remember the exact price.  In the back of her salon is a beauty supply store that sells to the public and has lots of high end and popular shampoos, conditions, gels etc. etc.  A real hidden gem.

Yes, the lady who does facials is Yola, at Esthetiques. A basic facial runs about $45, it's a European style facial, she removes every black/whitehead.

Thanks for spelling her name correctly.  I blanked and spelled it phonetically.  but it's Yola I'm talking about also.  She's great.  Been going to her for 15 years.  Love her and also Assia when Yola's not available.  they're both terrific.

I'm giving the thumbs up for Raul who works at the Makeup Shop on 37th Avenue.  I'm low key when it comes to hairstyling as well, and I've found that Raul keeps it real every time.  He doesn't force any weird styles or ideas on you, unless you ask him to.  He's pretty low key himself.  The only downside is that the Makeup Shop gets pretty crowded and there's lots of socializing going on.  Appointments are definitely required on weekends.

I'm also going to recommend Isabel's salon.  They are one of the older, more established salons in the neighborhood, and they are not as sparkley as some of the newer places.  But the staff are skilled and warm and they know what they are doing.

If you've seen me on the street with really dreadful looking hair recently, that has everything to do with being a new mom, and nothing to do with Isabel's.   :)

I went there for years before going to someone closer to home. I was throughly satisfied with them. I also used to buy the products, and one of the few places to get Nioxin.

Esthetiques ~ 718-478-3258, either Yola or Assia. You need an appointment, and they are closed Sunday and Monday. Best pedicure around, about $24.

84-24 37th ave at Shear Success.

I've been going to Yola for over a decade.  When she's busy, I see Assia.  Love them.  Wish Shear Success would spruce themselves up a little bit but I still go there.

Pure Spa in sunnyside (at the 40th street stop) is amazing.  I had THE MOST meticulous wonderful manicure there, and the pedicure stations are immaculate.  Not expensive, either.  They have a good website too.

Also, Charles Hair Salon on the corner of 86th and 37th across from the Bagel store.  Marie from Spain (there's another Maria  working there.)

I had my hair colored (single process), cut and blown dry.  With tax $59.  I've gone to Marie on and off and to Isabel.  I'm a hair stylist so can do my own color when I want and have stylist friends who will cut for free but I sometimes go local and like Marie at Charles a lot.

hair salons? recommend!

I noticed that there are a few hair salons on 37th Ave.  I'm in need of a local hair stylist.  I'm looking for someone inexpensive who knows what they're doing with the scissors (I refuse to go to Manhattan and pay $100+ for cutting off an inch of my hair, I'd rather do it myself!).  Anyone have any recommendations in JH or the surrounding neighborhoods?  Extra points for knowing how to cut short hair!   :)

A 2nd vote for Maria at Charles Hairstylist. She has been coloring and cutting my hair for years. She is great.
She has been also doing the haircuts for my husband and son. Also great.
The prices are right also.

I had a great experience at Ingrid's (the new big one on the corner).  I walked in, they were able to fit me in, and the wash, cut and blow out were around $35!!!  I forget the name of the person who cut my hair, but I was at the station right in front of the window...  My hairdresser was transgendered - everyone used the male pronoun, but he was dressed as a woman.  I wish I could remember his name - it was a really good haircut.

Bad Local Business - Nail 37 - Has Anyone Else Had A Problem With Them?
« Reply #29 on: July 03, 2008, 10:10:25 PM »
I really love Jackson Heights.  I've lived here for two years.  And for the most part, the people and businesses are really great here.  I was just wondering if anyone else has had a problem with Nail 37.  They're located on 80-08 37th avenue.

The workers there speak mainly Korean or Spanish.  I understand and speak both languages.  So, I hear everything they say about their customers.  And they do say some mean things.  The treatment of customers there is not a priority.  They're pretty rude.

Last week was the final straw for me.  I was told to come in at 6:30 pm for an appointment.  I get there and waited for over an hour.  After they kept taking other customers that arrived after me - I spoke up.  They told me everyone has to wait.  So, I waited til 7:50 pm when they finally told me they were closing for the day and that I would have to come back tomorrow.  I told them I had my appointment for 6:30 pm.  They basically ignored me and started to close up.

Apparently, this has happened to other people in my building and worse.  One girl told me she got foot fungus from there.  We're not going back there.  She's trying to report them to the Dept. of Health.  Any suggestions for nicer and cleaner salons in the area?  Thanks.
