Real Estate & Home Improvement / Re: Stripping old radiators
« on: January 14, 2010, 02:34:40 PM »
well, i decided to do the work myself. didn't use any chemicals, just chipped away at the old paint with a screwdriver, hammer, a wire brush and sandpaper. i didn't get to remove all the layers but i got a lot off and smoothed it for a good old primer and painted with silver enamel paint. here is the final project completed.

speaking of bathrooms.... i didn't want to start another thread so i'll pose my question on this one. how easy (or difficult) is it to change the location of the bath tap from its typical location at the end of the tub to be the center on the side of the tub in a pre-war co-op? does this make sense? has anyone done this?

oh, and if you live locally, colony does deliver a case for free.

chuckster, i am a great fan of rioja, a spanish red wine of tempranillo grapes and torres is my choice vineyard. i also love ravenswood's red zinfadel, but they tend to be about $12/bottle. i usually buy a case of torres' sangre de toro at colony wine & liquor (37th ave & 84th st) and get 20% off. i believe their price per bottle is $8 or $9, so if you buy a case of 12, you'd save about $1.60 a bottle.

on a side note, i did find a wonderful wine and liquor store in sunnyside called lowery liquor (off the lowery st stop, 7 train). they have the most thorough selection of wine and liquor. plus, their price of freixenet (cava) is $2 or $3 cheaper per bottle than at colony. they also give 10% off for a purchase of a case. i have found some liquor brands i've not seen around, such as patron's citronage (orange liqueur) and green jack (as in daniels).

every time i go for a run, i do keep my eyes out for a vacant space.
that's why i'm thinking woodside might be better.
i'm sure in this economy, some businesses have closed, sadly..
so i think if anyone has seen a potential location.
do send it along to tj's.

Anyone ever been to the ABC Carpet & Home outlet in the Bronx?  I took a drive there recently and actually got lost in the place while looking for rugs.  The selection is so large I didn't even know where to begin.  I'm wondering how the outlet compares to the other retail locations.

Here's the website:  ABC Carpet & Home

chuckster, i think the ABC warehouse in the bronx is totally worth it if you are not looking for something very specific. i found their selection to be varied and frankly overwhelming. but i wasn't looking for any particular design and walked away with a few good finds, not in the rug department, however.

besides, i'm now going to the JH green market for my local veggies
and would love trader joe's to supplement
the dry goods.
they have the best priced recycled toilet paper and paper towels.

I'd much rather have something like a member-owned and operated food co-op than a Trader Joe's. I wonder which is more likely: a co-op, or a Trader Joe's.

to be honest,
i wasn't entirely thrilled with how the food co-op was run in park slope.
it can be very, uh, regimented.
not entirely worth the savings, for me at least.

at least trader joe's have good employment practices
and in this economy, maybe new jobs in jackson heights (or woodside)
would the added bonus.

on another note, i would LOVE a fairway nearby too.

now that zipcars are in JH
i've started another campaign.
bring trader joe's in jackson heights, or woodside.
i suggest woodside as well
because real estate-wise
there may be more opportunities there.
regardless, please fill out the form from the link below
and ask for a new location in jackson heights or woodside.

http://www.traderjoes.com/location_requests_form.aspx

let's go JH Lifers!

nota bene: i also wrote to NYSC about opening a location in jackson heights.

see above entries. i made a recommendation for "excellent quality movers".
they moved my friends without a hitch or a break either.
i think they were insured.

we got it! we got it!
seriously, when i posted on july 19, 2009, there were no zipcars in jh.
now there are 5.
2 in the 82nd st and 37th ave parking garage
and 3 in the 81st just south of roosevelt parking garage.
our bevy of choices include:
a scion and a sentra (82/37)
a mini, a honda element and a honda cr-v (81/41)
all 5 cars show up in those locations when i sign in and try to reserve.
thanks everyone!

i think our next guerilla campaign should be bringing trader joe's to jh.

hi samiam.
i moved into dunolly last oct and recently finished work on our kitchen. i was very happy with our contractor, who is local, and the finished product. we totally renovated our kitchen with new appliances, floor, backsplash, plumbing, etc. plus we had pocket doors installed so a new wall was erected. PM me if you want contact info and photos of the finished product.

i'd like to add my comments to the forum, being a recent immigrant to JH.

i've lived in harlem, the west village, park slope and greenpoint, and by far, JH is my favorite. yes i miss park slope's every growing restaurant and bar scene and the beautiful tree-lined streets, but JH has streets and avenues of gorgeous garden co-op buildings and an amazing selection of various cuisines from around the world. i live in an historic garden co-op and love my green courtyard; it makes up for the lack of public green space in JH.

as for edibles and imbibables, i make a number of local stops: met foods on 37th & 76th for the at-the-moment basics; woodside CSA for fresh fresh local veggies (and the greenmarket for veggies that i need but don't get from my csa); chonghap for all my korean ingredients; pacific market for my fresh rice noodles; and trade fair for my late night last minutes snacks. when i have a car, i drive to trader joe's in rego park on a sunday morning. i go to colony wine & liquor on 37th & 82nd for a case of torres and freix.

lucille, if you fall in love with this neighborhood as i did on my first visit to an open house and decide to move out here, you will not be disappointed.

i've been a zipcar member for a year now, and i think their concept is great. i don't really want to own a car, but having hourly rentals is ideal. if you have a business, it's only $9/hr during weekdays, otherwise, i think it's $11/hr otherwise, and includes insurance and gas. yes, they pay for gas.

i've already written to them suggesting the indoor parking garage on 82nd st and 37th ave as a new location. i think if they heard from more JH residents expressing interest, we may be able to get a car or two in there. right now, i have to go to sunnyside or court square to pick up a car. no obligation... just submit an inquiry from this link: http://www.zipcar.com/help/contact.
