Neighborhood Chat / Re: Official DOT plans for 34th Avenue
« on: November 22, 2021, 05:25:52 PM »
We rank either 49 or 50th out of 51 City Council Districts for available park space in NYC. The district that ranks dead last is located across Fifth Avenue from Central Park. The OS is needed to provide desperately needed open space for our community. And btw, it is for pedestrians, not just bicyclists, as someone above suggested.
Don't think anyone can conclude that most people who live on 34th Avenue are for OR against the OS. Most of the people I know who live there are in support, but we all operate in our own circles.
My experience, though is that people who are against something are generally more vocal than supporters and the fact that the anti-34th Avenue march a month or so ago only attracted about 35 people seems to indicate to me that there is NOT a lot of opposition.
Not everyone might agree with me, though.

Neighborhood Chat / Re: AOC Just Couldn't Wait...
« on: September 28, 2021, 11:23:35 PM »
I don't understand the criticism. First it was - she's an unqualified bartender. Then it was - she's a fake because she graduated college and was taped dancing with her fellow students. Then it was - how could she afford a business suit to wear on the House floor, or to rent a place in DC. Now she's a traitor because she attended the Met Gala?

Who cares. I would have gone in a second to that Gala. And the very fact that Ana Wintour invited her speaks to her relevance, exposure and standing - all good things if we want anything done in the community. Stop beating on a young woman just because she dresses nice. It's silly.

It's not that. The cost of the Met Ball for her and her outfit can be up to $100K. Or more.

Meanwhile, I still see lines for food distribution in Jackson Heights.

And AOC's platform is for the under-privileged. Not the over-privileged.

The juxtaposition is astounding. And comes across as dissonant.

It's having your cake and eating it too. Or perhaps reminiscent of, "Let them eat cake!"

I don't believe AOC spent $100,000 on that dress. Don't designers loan or give these outfits so they get publicity?
I don't see an issue here. It's not like she wore a tan suit in the Capitol. That Obama! How did we even survive those eight years?

The "skip the stuff" bill targeting the plastic straws and utensils given out by restaurants is supposedly a done deal! However, getting the bill passed by the end of the year before most of the Council Members timeout is not a done deal, so we need to keep the pressure up.

Check out this link, (https://bit.ly/skipthestuffnyc2021) for info about the phone banks on October 4, 13, and 18. We can do this! Let's get plastic out of our food, water, and bodies!

Neighborhood Chat / News on 34th Avenue Open Street
« on: May 17, 2021, 03:11:21 PM »
JHBG's official position on the 34th Avenue OS

The Jackson Heights Beautification Group has been advocating for neighborhood improvements and community engagement through wide-ranging popular programs serving all segments of our diverse population for more than 30 years.  We seek to continue to serve our community by bridging the current divide over the 34th Avenue Open Street program, focusing debate on helpful solutions.

Though the JHBG supports the 34th Avenue Open Street (and Open Streets in general), we recognize that some of our neighbors opposing the program are raising issues that should be addressed.  We call upon our elected officials to consider these concerns and work towards solutions that are inclusive of the area’s diverse constituents.

The 34th Avenue Open Street program represents a rare opportunity to construct a new healthful amenity that will contribute to our community’s social life.  For a New York City neighborhood short on park space, this program is a true asset.  At 1.3 miles in length, our program is one of the longest in the city.

The following are some of the key concerns raised by our neighbors and some suggested areas for mitigating impending challenges:

* Problems of access.
Guaranteeing unencumbered entry to buildings for disabled residents, as well as car owners with parking garages along the avenue, schools and delivery trucks, especially those serving commercial locales along 34th Avenue.

* Facilitating municipal services.
Ensuring maintenance of roads in the form of snow removal and easy access for emergency vehicles and regular sanitation services.

* The proliferation of vendors along 34th Avenue, especially those serving food.
Vending regulations, additional sanitation services and other maintenance, along with vermin abatement, are needed alongside enforcement practices for addressing related nuisances.

* Road safety: cars, electric scooters, motorcycles, and other forms of electric transport present special hazards when mixed with pedestrians.
Clear and visible rules governing direction of travel as well as the safe separation of vehicles and pedestrians are required, as is strict enforcement of the rules.

* Traffic congestion on adjacent streets, especially, but not limited to 35th Avenue, particularly during rush hours and late afternoons/early evenings on weekends.
A comprehensive traffic study is necessary, especially one following the city’s full reopening; measures for improving traffic flow on other streets, including retiming traffic lights; finding alternatives to private cars, including expanding Select Bus Service on Northern Boulevard.

* Serving our neglected constituents.
We recommend the reconstruction and widening of the median to improve tree survival with improvements extending to Junction Boulevard. This part of the neighborhood has a greater concentration of immigrants and elderly residents, and often receives less attention than other areas.

* Rules of conduct for unmotorized users, reducing excessive noise and illegal   behaviors.
As much as drivers and riders must meet a standard of conduct, so should pedestrians and visitors of all sorts.  With open access to greenways and increased pedestrian traffic, standards must be set and enforced to protect existing plant life and improve maintenance.

* Protecting and enhancing our median greenways.
Existing plant life is now under added stress with foot traffic from people and pets requiring signage deterring use of the garden beds, as well as a commitment from city government that in addition to the new trees scheduled this upcoming year, our medians will receive proper care and maintenance including litter cleanup and rodent control.

Several of the points on this list require enforcement.  We are prepared to work with the relevant city agencies to help establish and guide proper behavior among the various constituents using and enjoying the Open Streets program. [/font]

Yes, good idea. Raising subway fares and bitting service is even more regressive.
From what I read, the state Senator said this is for after the Pandemic.

Thank you. Not absolutely sure if it is this post or FB, or both, but we are getting some responses.
We really appreciate it. There are so many demands and needs, some, just keeping one's self on course during these difficult and often lonely times. Hang in there.

Neighborhood Chat / Re: Political Commentary of the Day

Hate to break up the whole “I love Social Security “ love fest but given the decline in population after the baby boomers there will not be enough workers to cover the retirement costs of the elderly. It is only a matter of time before they will need to cut benefits or  American workers will emigrate to seek a better life without legacy costs. It truly is a Ponzi scheme. Most twenty to forty year olds will never see a dime of social security they pay into.

Social Security - OK, let's take a few breathes and calm ourselves.
A Ponzi scheme? Well, this one has been working for what, more than 80 years? Think any associated scam would have shown up by now.
Also, when I and my friends were in our 20s and 30s, we were convinced we would never see a dime from Social Security.  Guess what, baby boomers are collecting Social Security. The unavailability of Social Security for us must be one of those intergenerational complaints like (from the side of the divide) these kids listen to bad music, are lazy and/or irresponsible. (On the latter point, hear Cole Porter's Anything Goes.
Want to make Social Security stable further into the future, for one thing, take the cap off for earnings subject to SSA contributions.
And there are other ways to make Social Security work until the baby boomers are no longer collecting and the U.S. returns to a more normal age-population distribution.
