Here's a good deal, unload your used books in Jackson Heights and pick up something else to read. Or just do one of the above.
The Community Book Exchange has been taking place this summer at the Jackson Heights Green Market, Sunday's from 8 a.m. to noon. See attached.

Neighborhood Chat / URGENT - Huge oak trees coming down in Travers Park
« on: August 26, 2019, 04:38:00 PM »
One huge oak tree chopped down, another one set to come down soon in Travers Park apparently because of planned "park improvement."

* Please contact NYC Parks. 718-520-5958. Ask for Michael Dockett, Queens Parks Commissioner.

We just might stop any further trees coming down if everyone seeing this calls.  Let's deluge them with calls!

Councilman Dromm already has contacted parks, but calls from the public to Parks will help support him.

Be polite but very firm that they should not take any more trees down without an explanation to the community. Tell them the community was never notified about the removal of these trees. No plan was ever presented to the community, certainly not with the removal of these historic trees.

These trees are old and produce huge environment benefits that cannot be replaced by all the new trees they've recently planted at the park until decades pass.

Wouldn't hurt to go to park and tell the Parks arborist there that they need to stop until this is looked into.

I haven't seen any evidence that there were health problems with these trees, but that can be misleading. Trees could rot from within without evidence from outside. If there is a problem with the health, such as the tree hollowing out, they should be able to show that in the tree already chopped down.

Thank you for the info Todd and Filmo.
AOC and Joey the Mushroom Man in one movie. Now I have to see it. I've been putting this off in favor of escapist fare on Netflix. (Can't imagine why)

As a long-time park and environmental sustainability advocate, I'm a little conflicted about this matter.
If were starting from scratch on that site, I would prefer all of 78th Street to be closed down for the park. As someone who was involved in the park expansion from the beginning, I'm kind of mystified by the changes here. I remember that the the Garden School and the car dealership, originally Queensboro Toyota, would have access to the northern most segment of the street. Clearly something changed and the entire street was to become parkland. And then it wasn't.
I think we need to remember that Jackson Heights and it's organizations won a huge victory to expand and recreate the park. I'm concerned that closing the northern-most end of 78th Street would cause an undo burden for the school and car dealership that will not provide a substantial benefit.
This is not to criticize those working to extend the park all the way to Northern Boulevard, but personally I think we'd be better off spending our energies looking for new park/open space in Jackson Heights; opportunities to make our neighborhood more environmentally sustainable, AND  helping NYC Parks maintain Travers Park.
JHBG's Friends of Travers Park is revving up again after the park's two year shutdown. If you are interested in participating in Friends of Travers Park, contact me at lenmaniace@gmail.com with FOTP in the subject line, Thank you.
And Happy Earth Day!

106-01 Northern Blvd. On the corner south side of the street. They are very good. Also have flats fixed there. I've had bent rims fixed at least twice. Those low-profile wheels are a killer!

Neighborhood Chat / Re: Congestion Pricing
« on: January 19, 2019, 07:23:58 PM »
"Many causes of congestion are the existence of bike lanes that are unoccupied for what appears to be over 80% of the time and serve little more than to take away a lane of traffic from other motorized vehicles."
Congestion one NYC roads were around long before bike lanes occurred.
Also, we have bike lanes on 34th Avenue and they do not cause congestion on that street and that';s true for the vast majority of bike lanes, if not all.
Bike lanes provide very cheap transportation to work for many immigrants who don't have the money for cars. I did a news story a few years back and about 75 percent of the people going over the Queensborough Bridge were immigrants. I spent a good time interviewing folks.
Congestion pricing restores the unfairness that occurs when the bridges least capable of landing lots of traffic are free, while the ones that are best able to have tolls.
The free bridges are usually located in poor or working class neighborhoods, meaning those folks suffer with air pollution and noise.
The Move NY plan has fixes for folks living in places lacking subway service - Verrazano, Throgs Neck, Whitestone, even Triborough bridges - the tolls would be lower. Also, it would help keep and create jobs in NYC by reducing congestion so deliveries and repair people would be able to get to their destinations sooner.
Oh, and it would provide a huge amount of money to upgrade transit. And it would help battle global warming. When it comes to the environment, subways are the Big Green Machine.
Cheers.

Neighborhood Chat / Re: Dog park under the BQE
« on: January 19, 2019, 07:10:00 PM »
The dog park near the BQE on 69th Street was created and is run by JHBG.
Anyone can join, with one small requirement. You need to apply that requires proof of inoculations, your dogs, not yours. LOL.
That's required for obvious reasons, to protect dogs, people and JHBG from legal liability. If people want to make a donations to JHBG they can, but it is not required. BTW, I haven't heard  of another one that is run by an all-volunteer nonprofit organization in NYC.
If you send me an email to lenmaniace@gmail.com, I'll get it to the right person who can fill you in.

Drag your Christmas Tree to Travers Park on Saturday and Sunday - and get a free bag of mulch in return.

What's more, JHBG volunteers will be working Saturday with NYC Parks to mulch nearby trees. So you can get some winter exercise (the slopes don't seem to have snow) and afterwards warm up with hot chocolate and other snacks from NYC Parks.

Starts at 10 a.m tomorrow. See you there

Neighborhood Chat / Re: Travers Park Update
« on: January 11, 2019, 07:20:28 PM »
Don't think NYC Parks ever said it was going to take less than 18 months to renovate Travers Park. The department always said they would renovate in phases so that some part of the park is *always open.
I don't see how the "Great Lawn atop Mount Jackson Heights" could possibly be open this year. The sod needs to be rolled out and have a growing season to properly root before people do what they do atop it. I don't know if that means it can open in the fall or next year.
To answer someone else's question, there is to be a completely seperate renovation of the kiddie area under a plan announced, I think, early last summer at the park. This came ab out when new funding became available.

*Back around 1994, the entire park was closed for 18 months to two years due to a problem with the contractor who had started the work and the job had to be rebid. We may justifiably complain about somethings, but NYC Parks is much better run the last couple of decades.
