This is the route i normally take to Times Square. I'm not totally thrilled with it. Broadway through Astoria kinda sucks.

Last night I went to a few bike shops to do some research on a bike purchase, and I got a really fantastic bikers map at one of them (free!).  I got it at Eddie's on amsterdam and 84th, and it's the 2008 NYC Cycling Map.  it's great, so get one if you can.

You can call 311 and ask the City to mail you a copy of the official NYC Bike map.

I bike in and out of Manhattan a couple of times every week during the summer. I love it. I think that most of you follow the root over the 59st bridge but I though I would post my route also

If I have time I go over the Williamsburg Bridge but I take the east side bike/walking path and then up Kent.
Nice to see so many people biking in.

I took my first ride today since last summer.  Took E train to Jamaica, then rode to Howard Beach, and the Shore Parkway to Coney Island, then the F train back.  Total 31km riding.

bicycling spots?
« Reply #21 on: May 03, 2008, 03:12:44 PM »
Hi

I am new to Jackson Heights and this group. Nice to see an active group dedicated to Jackson Heights and hope to see you all sometimes

I just bought a bicycle and was looking for areas to ride it on weekends... i stay near the subway station (74th & Roosevelt). I tried Central Park- it was beautiful but found trudging the cycle up and down the subway inconvenient

So would be great if you could suggest any parks etc in short cycling distance :)

Thanks so much

best regards,
Kamal

tyro question
Just moved to NY and got a bicycle; so appreciate the advice

Do we need a helmet to ride a cycle? I know its safer and will buy it but haven't purchased it yet.  So was wondering if I may get a ticket for cycling without the helmet; or its ok to do so?

Thanks

A helmet is not required by law for riders over the age of 14 years.

It's not against the law to ride without a helmet. Darwin might issue a ticket, however.

I just got a bike last weekend.  I'm really excited to use it, but I see that the Tour de Queens is already full... :'(

CIGI Bicycle Shop at 91-07 37th Ave. (bet 91st and 92nd I think). Carlos (owner?) is very nice. I've had my bike tuned there a couple of times and have been very happy.

To be honest I think CIGI's is a ripoff. he sells tubes for like 8 bucks when you can get them for 4 elsewhere, i usually got to spokesman. near vernon jackson blvd.
