it's great how these wide bike lanes are popping up all over nyc. I rode through times square this weekend and it was the most dangerous riding I've been in for a while. Tons of people walking all over the bike lanes - I'll tell you what, I prefer the cars tenfold!

Just wanted to revive this old thread as it has helped me tremendously in biking around queens from JH.  I'd like to add a nice quick route to Astoria park that I've discovered: I'm at 82nd/37th av so I bike over to 81st street which I take all the way down to 25th av.  From there, make your way to 80th and head north, crossing over the Grand Central.  Then make a slight left to go north on 78th. At the end of the street (19th road), take a left and then a right to Hazen.  From there you can go left to 20th av and that will bring you all the way to the park (you can also use 19th av, but 20th av actually has a bike lane).  It's about 20 minutes with not too many hills and little traffic.  The busiest intersection is the one prior to crossing the GCP but it's pretty safe and the lights last a while, otherwise it's mostly stop signs and quiet areas without too many cars.  It's also a great driving route to Astoria and I use it all the time to pickup some Greek food to bring home.
Good luck!
