New Trader Joes in Queens
« on: November 11, 2007, 03:34:23 PM »
Has anyone been yet?  I just went this morning at 11 am.  The parking lot was quite full but I still got a space.  On a Sunday morning it was a breeze to drive there from JH.  I drove on 76th St. to 45th Ave to Queens Blvd to Woodhaven to Metropolitan.  I came back on Metropolitan to 69th St. all the way to JH.

It's a nice store - very wide aisles - guess they did their homework before building the store.  There's a wide range of products there and it's 10 times more pleasant than shopping in the Manhattan one.

No wine, though - you'll have to go the Manhattan TJ's special wine store for that.

I went around 5 pm on Saturday, and the place was packed.  But typical for a Trader Joes, as busy as the store was, the check-out lines were a breeze.

Traffic was pretty bad at the time I went there -- my choice of GCP -> Jackie Robinson Pkwy -> Metropolitan Ave. --> TJs wasn't the best choice.  It took about 45 minutes each way.  I'll try your route next time, but it may slow too at that time of the weekend.

Over the years, I've been a regular shopper at two other Trader Joe's locations (the others were in California and out on Long Island).  Compared with those, our location does seem to have wider aisles, and a larger selection.  Hooray!

Perhaps I can get my wife to join this board and share some of her famous TJ shortcut recipies.  In the meantime, here's a site for members of the cult... http://www.traderjoesfan.com/

Why did they put this no where near a subway line? I guess I'll stick to Union Square.

I completely agree with this statement.  I know I'm not too thrilled of having to take a subway and bus or an even longer bus ride out to the new TJs in Queens.  Even driving out there is a chore.  There aren't many interesting shops nearby to even make the trip worthwhile for me.  To sum it up, it's not the most convenient location.  I'll also be continuing my trek to Union Square for now.

Whew, Chuckster, I am so glad to hear that. Be sure to tell all your friends, neighbors and relatives not to go there either. That way it won't be so crowded when I go.

I'll also happen to mention it to all the folks in the Forest Hills, Rego Park and Woodhaven areas, so that they won't crowd that parking lot for you.

I'm excited that there is a Trader Joe's in Queens, but the location does put me off a little. Is there anything else of interest in that shopping center to make the trek worthwhile?

JD,
Staples and a soon-to-open Michael's Craft shop are also located within the TJs shopping center.  The nearest thing to interesting would be the shops located in the not too far off Atlas Shopping mall in Glendale or the shops on Austin Street in Forest Hills.  Then again, these shops are not necessarily within walking distance.

Anytime you need a ride to TJ, just PM me. Like they say at the Men's Warehouse, "You're Gonna Like It!" I prefer going on a weekday. There are some perks to being retired, you see.

And for me, with Michael's opening, and carrying the Martha Stewart craft projects collection and tools, I can make 2 stops there.

It doesn't take a whole lot to make me happy, happy, happy.

We had a car last weekend, so we drove to TJ's. It was extremely inconvenient to drive to from Jackson Heights unfortunately, so we'll probably not be doing this again anytime soon. I think there is a bus that goes nearby, but by the time we take the train to Queens Center and figure out the bus number and schedule, we might as well have just taken the R train to Union Square.

BTW, the Queens TJ location wasn't crowded at all when we were there. We  were only waiting behind one person in line. The parking lot was crazy yes, but there is plenty of parking behind by Sports Authority.

If I had a car already and was going to be in the area anyway I would probably go again, but I wouldn't make a special trip to to this location. I really wish they would have been wiser and built this near better public transportation.

I just got back -- took the Q53 right from 75th and Broadway. The bus drops you catty corner from Trader Joe's. The store probably seemed crowded-ish to other people but, with memories of shopping Union Square in my mind, it seemed positively empty to me. I bought one of their cold bags to keep my frozen stuff frozen and it worked beautifully. The only pain was getting back on the crowded bus with my bags -- but I got a seat once we hit the Queens Center Mall so it really wasn't all that bad at all.

FYI, I was at Trader Joe's yesterday and a manager told me if this site does well here in Queens, they will open another location in Queens. (and they have been doing well)

The Brooklyn outpost on Atlantic ave. will be their next NYC location.
