One of the cashiers at TJs told me today that one problem (from his point of view) is that the store hired too many people and they can't possibly use them all.  He said he thinks they are going to let go at least half of the people they hired in January.

I am not sure if this means the store hasn't been doing as well as they had expected, or if this is a strategy- hire twice as many people as you need and the half that you are left with a few months later will be the best, most hardworking employees.

I picked up a jar of Trader Joe's Mango Chutney on my last trip there.  We tried it for the first time tonight and thought it was pretty good.  It has a mild kick to it, so it goes well with blander foods like my unintentionally under seasoned pork chops tonight.  I also like TJs Quinoa.  It cooks in 15 minutes and is a nice alternative to brown rice.

Any TJs product recommendations?  I'm eager to experiment.

Stay away from TJs raisin mix. The worst tasting raisins EVER. Taste like sulphur.  I almost wanted to return them and then I woke up.
First, do no harm.

There is a dry spice mix that comes in a small round bottle that's called "pasta seasoning blend."  Ingredients are onion, garlic, basil, lemon peel, paprika, fennel, oregano, pepper, ginger, thyme and lemon oil.

I have never used it on pasta.  So far I'v used it for marinating shrimp and chicken.  I add other things to the marinade as well such as fresh squeezed lemon or lime and thai fish sauce.  But the spice mix has plenty of taste on its own.

Shelby, what as coincidence that you mention this.  Reading your description, I realized that I purchased a bottle of this spice mix last week!  It has a green label and cap.  The specific one I got is called 21 Seasoning Salute.  According to the label, it's salt free, non-irradiated and all natural.

Tonight I heated up a couple of TJs veggie egg-rolls.  Only 90 calories.  They're actually pretty good for when you're feeling lazy and don't want to cook.  We pair them up with the TJs pot stickers for a complete meal.  Anyway, I used the mango chutney again with the egg rolls.  I love TJs!

Drove by the Queens TJ's earlier this afternoon and noticed that the Panera is officially open.  I also noticed that 5 Guys will be opening adjacent to Panera.

Danger, Danger!  Now when I go to TJ's to stock up on healthy foodstuffs, I'll be compelled to indulge in a big, sloppy, hamburger.   ;)

I do the opposite Todd.  I feel compelled to shop for healthy food after indulging!  Typical Chuckster scenario:

Chuckster goes to 5 Guys for burger.

Chuckster compensates by stopping at TJ's for her favorite organic frozen veggies. :2funny:

I sent an email to Trader Joe's when it was announced they would open a location in Queens no where near a subway station expressing disappointment.  I could understand why they would want to focus on customers with cars who would purchase more.  But why not a site near a subway station with parking?  They quickly responded and said they would forward my email to the Real Estate Division and that a second store in Queens was a possibility.  I'm aware of the bus at 74th & Broadway which I may try soon.

I took a trip to Trader Joe's today.  Going on a Sunday afternoon was a BAD idea (horribly slow-moving crowded parking lot, store so crowded inside that you couldn't move, very long lines despite every register open).  That being said, I'll definitely be going back during a less busy time.  I tried a bite of the coffee ice cream I got and it is really good--looks to have ground up coffee beans in it.  I also got baba ghanouj, which was really good with pita bread.  Peanut butter granola bars were also really good.  I also got the 21 season salute spice mix mentioned in this thread, veggie masala burgers, low fat granola cereal and organic fat free milk (only 3.49!).  Can't wait to go back.. any suggestions for trip #2?  I've heard good things about the candy there.

I was at TJ's Thursday, in the late afternoon and it was not too crowded. As for candy, I like the boxed red licorice, dark chocolate covered raisins, dark chocolate covered raspberry jellies, pistachio toffee.

I forgot to mention the candy I did get..  Dark chocolate covered almonds with sea salt and turbinado sugar.   I thought it sounded like it would be good, because I love dark chocolate and I've have salted nuts and pretzels in chocolate and it's been good.  But these almonds are AWFUL! There is so much salt that it just tastes like salt.. you can't even taste the chocolate...  If all I wanted to taste was salt, I'd skip the extra calories and eat some salty pretzels..  I'll have to pick something non-salty next time.

The French chocolate truffles in the big red box are DELICIOUS!!!  I also like their sea-salted brownie bites in the clear round tub.

They have a policy that you can return anything if you don't like it.   :)

They have really good, amazingly affordable cereal too.  I buy the all fruit trail mix and throw a handful in with their twigs and berries fiber cereal.  so good.

Their yogurt is way cheaper than at stop and shop, and so is the grated parmesan.  At S&S this past weekend a container had gone up to 7.99, and it's less than $5 at TJs.

they have nice cheeses too, at better prices than anywhere I know of.  Good for cheese platters.

I also tried the grilled veggie tapenade in a jar, and though it looked oily and not very appealing, it tasted good on a baguette.

they also have sharon's sorbet, which i love.
