I'm hoping this isn't real. Very disturbing if it is.

"Authorities remove close to one million N95 respirator masks, gloves, gowns and other medical supplies after a Brooklyn man was caught allegedly hoarding the equipment. He faces charges for lying to investigators and coughing on FBI agents who confronted him."

(I do find it odd that they are carrying one box at a time.)

It's real. It was covered by the major news outlets. Today they said they were able to distribute his hoard to local hospitals so the results were good. https://nypost.com/2020/04/02/feds-distribute-200k-n95-masks-seized-from-coronavirus-hoarder/

If anyone has excess personal protective equipment, please donate it to: https://ppetonyc.wixsite.com/nycppe/

Our hospitals need these supplies!

Another NY Times article featuring our neighborhood...

'A Tragedy is Unfolding': Inside New York's Virus Epicenter

This is what happens when you celebrate, allowing and encouraging poor, uneducated people to come here to be taken advantage of by greedy people. They are totally unprepared for living and working in a (supposedly) advanced, expensive city.

from the article:
"Yet health care workers and community leaders say it is indisputable that the pandemic has disproportionately affected the Hispanic day laborers, restaurant workers and cleaners who make up the largest share of the population in an area often celebrated as one of the most diverse places on earth. Latinos comprise 34 percent of the deaths in New York City, the largest share for any racial or ethnic group, according to data released by state officials on Wednesday."

You have the other thread where someone complains about the lack of social distancing.

I have complained about continued dust from construction in Washington Plaza.  That poor man they have working in the basement, skin coating and dry sanding; making clouds or dust. How healthy is that for him?

AOC encouraged non-citizen poorest people to live here illegally. Her stance against affordable housing because the poorest can not afford it shows her lack of understanding about what NYC is. Where has her loud voice been lately?

People -- co-op owners, realtors, politicians, construction companies, etc. -- who have been taking advantage of these people, have created the situation at Elmhurst hospital.

And, let us not forget greedy doctors who consolidated hospitals into mega health care providers. Keeping costs down by not stockpiling equipment and meds in case there is an emergency.  They got rid of beds so there is not contingency plan for any emergency. All allowed by NYS and NYC politicians.

People encouraged this by their greed.

Rant over.

you need to take your argument to the Statue of Liberty. she's the one who encouraged the poor and huddled masses to come here in the first place.

You're right about the exploitation of the poor. And yes, when greed is a value, that's what happens. It's really terrible.

But you can't blame the victims for being exploited. That just ain't right.

There are a lot of contributing factors here.  "Exploitation" isn't the base answer for everything.

I am not at all blaming the victims for being exploited. I am blaming the greedy and the connected for encouraging the poor to move here to be further exploited.

The dangers of overcrowding (density) are being magnified exponentially due to this pandemic.

But can overcrowding in this neighborhood be remedied?

I can't see how.

Though, after this pandemic, it will be mighty tough times in NYC. (For those with nostalgia for their youth in 1980's NYC...surprise, I guess they'll be back!)... And so perhaps folks will leave.

i think the upper middle class will leave. the poor can't afford to, the wealthy can make sure they're safe. what's left of the middle-middle, that's the question.

Well, it's a dream come true for those folks who lamented the loss of  1970's/1980's New York!

Gee, I don't think immigrants come here solely "to be exploited" at the behest of the wealthy. They come because they want to come--because of violence, poverty, lack of opportunity, etc, in their home countries. The same as our ancestors.

So you think hospitals are owned by doctors?
Everything you are complaining about is caused by unregulated capitalism. Not AOC, not doctors.

If anyone is having trouble registering for unemployment it was announced today that the system was being shut down for 2 hours to make improvements. You should be able to do all on line without the dreaded phone call. Also they say they beefing up the amount of people able to get on the site at the same time. If there are problems with your application they will call you (imagine that) within 72 hours rather than you wearing out your batteries with redial.
