I also decided to make Kitchen 79 my #1 go to place for Thai food.  :)  I used to order from Ayada but the food sometimes is a bit too spicy for my palate, and I am not a huge fan of Arunee.

I haven't been to Fresh Spilt Milk yet.

I like the decor at Kitchen 79 too, but I'm usually there during the day for a late lunch (the lunch special is such a good deal), so I'm not sure about sound and all those hard surfaces in a crowded dinner. And I like the clock/sculpture thing-a-ma-jig. It's so...random.

I went to Fresh Spi'L't Milk the other day. They have a pretty good selection of sandwiches, smoothies and other stuff. I want to try one of their sandwiches. The interior is pretty nice.

Unfortunately it seems kind of overpriced. I didn't have a lot of time so I shared a small mango smoothie with my son. It was $6.00. https://www.seamless.com/menu/fresh-spilt-milk-7709-37th-ave-jackson-heights/623717

If the sandwiches are at a real gourmet level and big too then that's ok, otherwise I would probably get a sandwich at K&L deli right down the street. K&L sells large heroes that are pretty good for $9.00, but they aren't gourmet so this is where Spi'L't could justify their price.

That being said, I think they would have a better chance as a gourmet sandwich / juice shop if their marketing was better. The name is terrible and, as someone said above, you can't tell what it is they are selling.

I think they could learn a lot from Pauglina: Focus on one main thing. Make it very obvious to your customers what that is. Sell it at a fair price.

I think Kitchen 79 is the restaurant that took over the old Arunee space, yes? I've never noticed the front of that space as being filthy, and considering it's location, even if it were a bit dirtier, I can't say I'd be surprised. If that's the restaurant you mean, you're really missing out. It's my go to place for Thai in the neighborhood.

I was referring to the mirrored walls in the interior. The silverware was dirty and the light fixtures were really dusty. The entire place needed a good scrubbing but it's pretty dark inside so it's not as noticeable. The food was fine.

There's nothing on Spilt Milk's menu that I can eat so I guess I don't care if they don't clean their windows since I will probably never even go inside.

I grew up with neat freak parents and it has definitely rubbed off on me. My grandfather owned a diner and it was spotless. These things matter to me but I don't really care if anyone agrees with me or not; I don't feel the need for validation.

^But Kitchen 79 doesn't have mirrored walls. The walls are all subway tiles. There are mirrors hung on the wall above one long banquet. Honestly, one of the things I've looked at when I'm there was the many, many hard surfaces to clean, including crystal-like light fixtures that I wouldn't be keen on having to keep clean, and I've never noticed a spec of dirt. I've never noticed dirty silver ware. It's a pretty clean place. Maybe you went there one day after a particularly insane evening service, or when taking down the light fixtures to dust them was a bit overdue.

I wouldn't spend $6 for a smoothie either, but it's not because I think it's overpriced. When you consider the food cost and the other expenses (rent, utilities, employee compensation, storage costs, spoilage), you realize the business isn't exactly raking in cash hand over fist on a smoothie. Smoothies are just super easy to make (blender + yogurt + fruit) and I'd rather spend my money on things when I eat out that I can't make easily at home.

If the portion size is fair for a lunch (meaning it will fuel you until about 5 pm), I think it's really hard to argue that $10 for a salad that includes baby kale, avocado, grilled chicken, black bean salsa, baked Japanese sweet potato, spiced pumpkin seeds, and dijon-maple vinaigrette is over-priced. Now, whether or not there's a market for it in JH is a different story.

I agree though that name though isn't helping the store get customers. To me it sounds like a milkshake stand (and a poorly named one at that).

Fine, you win!  They were not mirrored walls, they were mirrors on the walls. They were still dirty and I do not want to engage on this further or argue about semantic word choices.

^then don't engage! Especially if you don't feel the need for validation or care if anyone agrees or disagrees with you. But, you are posting about a local restaurant being dirty because a decorative mirror might have needed to be sprayed with a bit of Windex and suggesting that means there are unsanitary kitchen practices, which calls in to question how safe it is to patronize that business. If you don't see why that could problematic for the owners, I don't know how to explain that to you.

Regarding Fresh Spilt Milk, I see they have a website now:

FRESH Spi'L't Milk

The description at the top says it's a Mediterranean and Italian restaurant with fresh juice / smoothie bar.  BTW, the site may be in an experimental stage, as some of the links are not working.

Definitely experimental! This is what's currently in their "About Me" section—I was amused:
A restaurant , or an eatery, is a business which prepares and serves food and drinks to customers in exchange for money. Meals are generally served and eaten on the premises, but many restaurants also offer take-out and food delivery services, and we also offer take-out and delivery. We offer a wide variety of cuisines and service .

For what it's worth, I have enjoyed everything I've ordered over the course of a few visits to Fresh Split Milk: an acai bowl, a mango smoothie, a kale salad, and lentil soup. The soup was especially good. It's always seemed very clean inside, and quite busy. The service has not been perfect but it's a new place, and it seems to be getting better. Very glad to have it as an option in the neighborhood and hope they stay afloat.

I agree they are doing themselves no favors with the totally confusing name, however.

Ha--the website is definitely under construction with placeholder copy. And the pix do not even vaguely resemble the actual offerings. They have someone creating a website who is just using stock photography and made-up copy to sketch it out. Surprising that it's live at this point. But I'm glad they are doing a website, and I hope they succeed, because I've also enjoyed everything I've ordered there. I hope their eventual website will explain the origin of the name!

First, you've made an assumption about my gender. Second, I'm not mansplaining your opinions to you. I'm pointing out the real economic harm you can do to a small business owner -- and the people who work for a business -- by publicly posting online equating a streaky mirror with unhygienic practices in a kitchen. (Never mind that back of house staff is responsible for the cleanliness of the kitchen whereas front of house staff is responsible for the front of house.)  That's an entirely different thing than mansplaining, and if you find it upsetting to be called out for trash talking people's livelihood's online, maybe don't do it. Thirdly, why are you still engaging when you previously stated you were done engaging?
