they're not closing the 42nd street station, just extending the line to 11th and 34th. there was going to be another station at the midway point, but i guess no developer stepped forward to help "encourage" that.

I didn't get that, unless I read something wrong. The terminus of the 7 will be at 34th & 10th, but the 42nd & 7th station will still be there. It just won't be the last station anymore.

Correct. The 42nd St. station will be the 2nd station or the 2nd to last station on the 7 train, depending on which direction the train is travelling.   I generally find it relaxing to be able to enter the 7 train in 42nd, be able to get a seat, and be able to wait for the train's departure inside the train instead of waiting on the platform for the train to arrive.  So I guess that won't be happening anymore at 42nd.

Ah yeah, I misunderstood "terminal". :) I should have stopped to think when it made no sense. :)

in a sense, yes, but it does seem to be a bit different these days.

I'd agree it is a bit different these days.  From Alfred Beach to Dual Contracts, subway building was a civic necessity (the IND was a bit different).  Without it,  the city would remain crammed into the southern tip of Manhattan, made only barely better by the inadequate elevateds.  The subway allowed the city to grow and develop the undeveloped areas around it.  Meat and potatoes, Plenty of real estate folks made a buck off it.  Nowadays, areas that do not have subway access are either under developed or car-dependent developed (the latter which could be argued as the same as the former) and extensions of the train into them represent a more refined development.  Real estate folks will still make a buck off it.  The question is whether that buck is ancillary to the project or not.

Frankly, I'd want any capital project that big to have at least one of its ears to real estate interests.  Other than a return to the 1980's, the last thing the system needs is a whoppingly underused subway extension built and maintained at enormous expense.

Want to second the idea brought up that Jackson Heights ought to be an express stop.  Is there any line of reasoning as to why Woodside is an express stop? Is it to facilitate the LIRR commuters who would otherwise take the train straight into Manhattan?

Its like the west side IRT (1,2,3).  It was built before the IND was built, so what would later seem to be a natural place for an express stop (Columbus Circle), its only a local stop.  74th street is the same way.  61st, with the LIRR and its much more built up Woodside, was a more logical choice when the dual contracts subway expansion was planned out.

Two words: High Line!

The #7 extension will provide us with excellent access to the Hudson River waterfront, and once the third phase of the High Line is finished, direct access to the northern terminus of that as well.

Co-sign! And my SO lives on 37th and 10th. This rocks.

Wooden_Soldier - yes Woodside is an express stop on the 7 because of the LIRR. But remember 74th is an express stop for the E & F.

Jackson Heights has 4 stops for the 7. That averages every 5 blocks!

Agreed!

Not possible for two primary reasons i would imagine:

1 - The biggest obstacle most obviously is that the station was not built to accommodate express trains similar to 61st/Woodside and Junction Blvd so it would result in congestion if every train had to stop there.
2 - I think the sheer volume of passengers getting on/off this would result in would make this a logistical and safety nightmare.

I think that is pretty much the end of the story. From a strictly "what if they wanted to spend millions" point of view, I'm an engineer and I have thought about it. They could either rebuild the entire track at 74th Street, which would probably shut down the 7 at times, or they could go up, which would be "interesting."
Neither seem particularly feasible.

Considering the dismal overcrowding on the E-F line this is a welcome relief.
