Apparently the Q Not finds June in Jackson Heights note worthy too :)

My understanding is that the parking meters would be replaced by bike racks. Not that the existing parking meters would become bike racks.

Having only ever seen the G in Jackson Heights once every few months, I honestly don't think it will be missed.

I'm certainly no mathematician, but... if we stay with the $2.6 Billion number and divide that among the 307,006,550 people living in the united states (according to the Census Bureau) then the cost of the census averages out to about $8.50 / person counted. If the benefit to communities from having residents counted is about $2,000.00 / person then is seems to me like it's a pretty good return on the investment.

While the total cost of the census is probably higher this time around, I don't think it will get so much higher than the $8.50 / person as to make the $2000 return not worth the effort. Also, consider that if we cut the cost of the census, then we wouldn't know where to allocate the money that was saved, or at least it would very likely no be properly allocated.

Could it be that a laundromat is going to move in there ?

And if you live in a tent, yurt, houseboat or igloo, you can't fill it out at all.  Or does houseboat qualify as "mobile home"?  ;)

I believe the term or the options you describe above is Other Living Quarters. At least that's what I remember from my brief stint as a census employee.

Neighborhood Chat / Re: 39th District State Assembly Seat
« on: March 18, 2010, 01:49:15 PM »
In my opinion it probably will. Which is kind of unfortunate. If HM decides to run for the seat and Governor called the special election as soon as possible HM would be in a bad position. He probably doesn't have much cash left for campaigns, and he'd suffer from the media attention surrounding his recent defeat. If he waits until September, HM has the time to raise more cash, and will be distanced from the current media reports which may give him an advantage.

And then there's this from the Daily News:

What is it with special elections and Queens?

Gov. David Paterson sounded in no hurry this morning to fill the seat of former Assemblyman Jose Peralta, who was sworn in yesterday after defeating expelled former Sen. Hiram Monserrate for his 13th SD seat in Tuesday's special.

The governor made the small-d democratic argument, saying he might prefer to give the public "a full opportunity with primaries and a general election, which is the best way to fill a seat."

But as it turns out, there's a political motivation for his reluctance, too.

The Queens Democrats have a preferred candidate for Peralta's old seat, Francisco Moya, who also happens to be a former Paterson aide (during the governor's Senate minority leader days).

The problem with Moya is that he only moved into the 39th AD last fall (he notified the city Board of Elections of the switch on Sept. 23, 2009) from what appears to be the 35th AD, represented by Assemblyman Jeff Aubry.

I thought this article was interesting: http://www.observer.com/2010/politics/monserrate-probably-cant-get-peraltas-assembly-seat

It is indeed an interesting article, but I'm not so sure its prediction is accurate. In what could be a 3 way (or more???) Democratic primary in a district where HM got 27% of the vote in a general election, the split of a much smaller amount of people (Registered Democrats) might turn out in HM's favor. And that's a sad and scary thought.

Beltrani is the Republican candidate who had a lack luster performance in the debates. He opposes marriage equality and does not seem to be serious about this election. That's all you need to know IMHO.

It may have been empty because it's the middle of the day. For the most part I think most people vote either on thier way to or home from work, so mornings and evenings see a lot more people.

So, beside being a Republican, what makes Judge Robert Beltrani not to the liking of the JHL community? Tons of "Democrats" voted for Bloomberg  :-\

Beltrani's performance in the debate at 145 was poor. His common answer seemed to me to be that government shouldn't be involved in social programs, there is no money, and he is opposed to Marriage Equality. There were a couple of questions he just didn't understand, which showed a lack of understanding of the issues to me. His energy and approach to the debate seemed like he really didn't want to be there. Beltrani is not serious candidate.

The republicans know they won't win this election, they are running someone just to take votes away from Peralta. It behooves them to have Monserrate in the Senate as his presence is  a black eye to the Democrtas, and HM's not likely to go along with the democratic leadership very often which certainly helps the Republican's cause in the Senate.
