Neighborhood Chat / Julio of Jackson Heights - Fundraising Drive
« on: March 19, 2011, 12:06:56 PM »
Hi Everyone, I wanted to let you know about an important project that needs some help in the next 36 hours.

My good friend Richard Shpuntoff has been working since 1993 to document the Queens Lesbian and Gay Pride Parade and Festival. His documentary tells the story of the 1990 gay bashing murder of Julio Rivera and how this heinous act galvanized a community which now hosts one of the largest and most vibrant celebrations of LGBT pride in the country.

This documentary is an important part not only of our local history, but the history of the LGBT movement across the country as well.

Completing this film will ensure that Julio's murder, and the positive change that came to JH because of it will not be forgotten.

Would you consider pledging a small amount towards the overall goal of $12,000 as well ? We have 36 hours left to reach our goal and every donation counts, no matter how small even $5.

Thank you for taking the time to read this, and thank you for your pledge !

Neighborhood Chat / Sears for Senate?
« on: February 19, 2010, 04:24:23 PM »
Apparently Helen Sears is considering running in the special election on teh Republican line:

From the Daily news:

Sears For Senate?

By Elizabeth Benjamin

A fascinating wrinkle has developed in the fight for Hiram Monserrate's Queens Senate seat, which, assuming Judge William Pauley's ruling today stands, is on track to be decided in a March 16 special election.

A GOP source confirms Helen Sears, a Democrat who lost her Council seat to Danny Dromm in a primary last fall, is in discussions with local Republicans, Conservatives and Independence Party leaders to run on their respective lines for Monserrate's seat.

Interesting Article on 145's principal Dolores Beckham infusing culture into 145. Reminds me of when I was there, Perry Sandler was the principal at the time and he arranged exchange trips with schools in Taiwan and Italy.

Join us in asking Council Member Helen Sears to

DENOUNCE THE POLITICS OF HATE

Sunday, August 9th at 1pm
outside her office at 37-32 75th Street
in Jackson Heights

Regardless of the candidate you support or the council district you live in, homophobia in any form cannot be tolerated.  Join us this Sunday in asking Council Member Sears to denounce hateful tactics and stick to a race focusing on issues important to the community.

If you cannot attend, please call Council Member Sears at (718) 803-6373 and ask her to make a public statement against these tactics.

Statement by Empire State Pride Agenda Executive Director Alan Van Capelle
August 6, 2009--"Daniel Dromm, a longtime community organizer, advocate for LGBT equality and currently a candidate for the 25th District of the New York City Council, has recently come under attack by anonymous forces using homophobic tactics to smear his reputation.

As a teenager in the 1970s, Dromm endured encounters with law enforcement officers that were typical of those times—when being gay was reason enough to be arrested. Now media outlets like NY1 are asking Dromm to answer questions about decades-old charges that were never upheld in court and replaying the interview multiple times daily.  To many in the LGBT community who had to endure similar persecution back then, this type of coverage is insulting and brings up painful memories.
We are glad that one candidate in this race, Stanley Kalathara, has denounced these attacks, and disappointed that Council Member Helen Sears declined to denounce them.  We call on her to immediately denounce these tactics and we call on NY1 to stop this sensationalist reporting.

It's time to stop talking about dropped charges from years ago and instead focus on the real issues of the 25th CD, including the recent bias-based attacks on transgender residents in Queens."

Pets and Animals / Cat Behavior
« on: February 19, 2009, 10:01:11 AM »
HI There,

So I've finally moved and all 3 cats are getting along relatively OK. They keep their distance but there hasn't been too much hissing or fighting. I think I may have seen the two boys secretly playing. (They have a facade to keep up you know).

There are two boys and a girl (all fixed) in our little cat family. The girl has picked up an interesting habit of digging around the food bowls that  her and her brother eat out of. She also covers them with her body while she does this. My cat, the older boy eats his own food on top of the fridge away from the other two food bowls and where the little ones can't get to it.  I'm assuming the little girl is doing some sort of primal food protection thing. But I just wanted to put this out there and make sure it's not a behavior that could be a sign of stress for her or if there is something that I could do to make her feel more at ease with the fact hat my cat has no interest in her Iams. Thoughts ?

Real Estate & Home Improvement / Printer / Framer
« on: February 12, 2009, 10:51:17 AM »
I have an image that I would like printed out and framed so I can hang it in my office. It's a decent size and I was wondering if there were any printing / framing places in or near JH that anyone out there has had experience with. Ideally I'd be able to hand a digital file to someone and have them print it and then frame it. I can however print the poster out and bring it somewhere to be framed. Thoughts ?
