Restaurants & Food / Re: Okawa Japanese Cuisine
« on: September 28, 2014, 02:55:21 PM »
I wonder if we will ever get a real Japanese restaurant with a Japanese sushi chef.  Probably not.  None of the Chinese-run Japanese places here satisfy my craving for good sushi.  I would rather go to Katsuno in Forest Hills.

Yep.  We have just Verizon internet.  They hassled us for not having landline phone service but relented.

Restaurants & Food / Re: The Arepa Lady's new restaurant
« on: August 29, 2014, 06:54:34 AM »
I'll start off by saying I was never a fan of the Arepa Lady when she had just the cart - I know I am of a small minority in this respect.  However, I am a foodie and I had to give her new restaurant a try since it offers meat-filled arepas (Venezuelan-style, which is my preference).  I got the arepa with beef, but sadly, I still didn't like the arepa itself.  The meat was nicely seasoned though.  The person behind the counter was very nice and offered me a cup of water while I waited for my take-out order.  Given the size of the restaurant, they should do very well with take-outs.

Real Estate & Home Improvement / Re: Washer in Coop?
« on: August 26, 2014, 10:36:12 AM »
Don't assume that just because they put down a washer/dryer in the listing that the owners are in compliance with the coop board.  I bought my apt with a washer/dryer already in the unit - neither were hooked up but they were included in the sale.  The seller's agent attested that they were allowed in the apts.  Much to my surprise, I was then told by the board at interview that they are not allowed because the old pre-war pipes can't sustain the load.  Those machines got thrown out (thankfully they were pretty old machines and in hindsight, the lack of hookup should've been a clue that something was not right).  We were fooled.

Neighborhood Chat / Re: Duane Reade @ 73rd - shady!

Prices definitely used to be more competitive here when Duane Reade wasn't such a dominant presence.  I do virtually all my drugstore purchases online now rather than give DR my business - Vitacost is way cheaper.  I also go the Bed Bath and Beyond coupon route when I need to have something the same day.

Can you describe this peeper?

Tall, lanky, Nepalese/Tibetan.

After work today I caught a guy positioned underneath the stairwell at 74th St looking up through the metal mesh at all the people coming down.  While I was waiting at the bottom of the stairs for my husband, I stared at the guy for a good minute - he kept deliberately looking up as people came down, so definitely a peeper.  Then he saw me and I gave him the evil eye.  That didn't faze him and he went back to peeping.  Be forewarned!  I've also seen this happen at the E/F/R platform where the stairs have the metal mesh inserts.

Neighborhood Chat / Re: What do you pay for electricity?
« on: August 03, 2014, 10:55:40 AM »
Thanks for the additional info!  (Thank you both for responding, btw)  I did some additional digging online and confirmed that Con Edison Solutions is the ESCO arm of Con Edison.  Why the utility has an ESCO is a mystery.  In any event, during my digging, I found this useful website that lists current pricing as well as pricing history (by month, going back several years!) for Con Edison and the ESCOs in NYS.  http://www.newyorkpowertochoose.com/ptc_choose.cfm?CFID=1002707&CFTOKEN=27447549  Assuming that the rates listed are accurate, I compared my monthly 2013 rates per kWh to the rates listed for Con Edison and found Con Edison Solutions overall had lower rates in 2013.  However, my 2014 monthly rates were a lot higher. >:(   Based on the chart, some of the current ESCO rates look pretty attractive, but I'm also wary of hidden fees and low intro rates that disappear after 2 months.  The pricing chart only tells you who's cheaper but not their reputations.

I'm thinking of ditching my ESCO and going back to Con Edison (not even sure how I got into the ESCO to begin with), but would like to hear from anyone who would recommend their ESCO as an alternative and also has competitive rates with Con Edison.  Thanks so much in advance for your input!

Could I ask a clarifying question here?  Is your supplier just "Con Edison" or "Con Edison Solutions"?  I'm asking because of the disparity I'm seeing in our kWh rates.  On page 2 of my bill, I see this statement under the section titled "Your supply charges" : "Your electricity is supplied by Con Edison Solutions."  I'm a little confused because I know Con Edison Solutions is part of the Con Edison company, but am now realizing perhaps that I am not getting my electricity supplied DIRECTLY by Con Edison (and you both are, at a cheaper rate).  Could you check page 2 on your bills?  I would really like to get to the bottom of this.  Thanks so much!

I'm curious to know what folks pay for electricity in this neighborhood.  My rates are higher than usual this year and I'm seriously thinking about switching to an ESCO.  Could we do an informal poll here of your costs going back the past 3 months?  How about the following setup for the poll so that we are not comparing apples to oranges - here's my info.  If 3 months is asking too much, please give the last month's bill info if you can.  I would really appreciate it and I think many of our neighbors on here would find this useful as well.  Thanks!!!

Electricity supplier?  Con Edison Solutions
Green energy supplier?   No
Supply charge for May?  11.2 cents per kWh
Supply charge for Jun?  13.2 cents per kWh
Supply charge for Jul?   16.4 cents per kWh
Total amount on your July bill?  $119
Square footage of your apt/house?  1100
Anything you want to add that impacts your electricity usage?  Hubby works from home 5 days a week

We used Paul from Forest Hills Electrical when we redid our kitchen - had him bring our wiring up to snuff.  While he was not the cheapest quote that we got, he was the most detail-oriented and a funny guy to boot.  He's got all his paperwork - ok'ed by the board any without problems.  He did a great job and we would hire him again if/when we do the bathroom.  718-894-4113

Does anyone use or have previously used FreedomPop as their internet provider?  I really don't want to do business with Verizon or Time Warner and there are very few options left.  FreedomPop looks intriguing but their customer service is supposedly not so great.
