Neighborhood Chat / QM 22 On The Chopping Block
« on: November 21, 2008, 10:48:42 AM »
So apparently as part of the MTA cuts the QM22 will be eliminated. The QM22 is an express bus that originates in Jackson Heights (77th St. and 31st ave.) and runs to midtown and runs during weekday rush-hours only.

Was curious to know if any one out there ever used the QM22 ? Relies on it ? Or if this cut might just be a logical one.

Pets and Animals / Integrating Cat Families
« on: August 25, 2008, 10:03:59 AM »
HI There,

So my partner and I are talking about living together some where in the next few months  (just as soon as I convince him that JH is the only place to live:) ).

He has two young cats (under one year) a boy and a girl. Both declawed, VERY sweet, they love me and they are pretty much docile little darlings.

I have an older cat, Mr.Kitty, we think he's between 11 and 12 years old. By all accounts a great cat with a bit of an attitude. He has his claws and is not afraid to use them. A few years back he was an only cat until two other cats came to live with me. When the new cats showed up he pretty much ignored me and would hiss at me if I tried to pet him after petting the other boy. After asserting his dominance with the other cats though he did get comfortable with them around and I think missed them after they passed away. (They were leukemia kitty's, Mr.K has his leukemia shot and is totally fine).

So for the past four years he's been living alone with me and enjoying it. Except when I go to work, go out anywhere,go away for a  weekend, or even go down stairs to throw out the garbage. So I'm thinking that as much as he enjoys his time with me he might have a little less separation anxiety if there were a couple of furry friends and one more human around.

I was curious if anyone has any thoughts on strategies for merging the two cat families with a minimum of flying fur, hissing and mayhem.

Neighborhood Chat / Term Limits - Undermining the people's will?
« on: August 25, 2008, 09:50:56 AM »
Curious to hear what folks think about eh possibility of the Mayor and City Council overturning term limits or at least extending them. I think it's a long shot, but should it happen that has a pretty big effect on local elections including our City Council reps Helen Sears an Hiram Monseratte. Thoughts ?

Neighborhood Chat / A Recycling Question
« on: August 08, 2008, 12:19:08 PM »
I'm working on an event in Central Park later in the month, that will result in about 800 - 1000 empty aluminum beverage cans each day for 8 days. We can not leave these cans in the park for recycling and have to dispose of them on our own. Contracting a private  carting company isn't an option as the expense is too great and it's hard to deal with the logistics of that inside the park.

Does anyone know of an organization that mght take these cans from us on a daily basis? Perhaps for a small donation ? There is probably a .05 cent deposit on these cans but 1000 cans only adds up to $50.

I'm also open to other wild and crazy ideas.

Jackson Heights of Yesteryear / The Polk Theatre, 1938-2008
« on: January 20, 2008, 01:58:33 PM »
Curious if anyone out there knows anything about what's happening with the Polk Theater on 93rd St. and 37th ave.

I know it was built in the late 30's, and served the neighborhood for quite a long time as a regular movie theater. At some point it transitioned over to Adult Films and sank in to ill-repute and disrepair (as many porn theaters do). Somewhere in Mid 2006, the building was bought by developers and has since been closed to the public (perhaps for the better)

A series of stores adjacent to The Polk have also been closed for a significant amount of time.

It seems as if the developers are planning on waiting out all the remaining commercial tenants and may proceed with demolishing the property entirely.

I ventured in to the Polk once while it was still open and discovered that under the layers of grime and smut there was a beautiful old 30s style theater with a large auditorium. It seems to me that Jackson Heights could benefit from a visible arts space that supports local arts groups and community functions.

Much like the Eagle (or Earle) theatre was transformed in to a unique Bollywood Gem for the neighborhood, wouldn't it be great to have another space that brings the arts and culture closer to our community?

Anyway, I was jsut curious to see if any one out there knew anything about what's happening on that block ?
