A local artist received a grant from the City called the City Artist Corps grant. She's using her grant towards doing a one time open studio/talk for teens and young adults so they can learn about "Art As a Path." She lives in the area (not JH but nearby) so feel free to check out her website to see some of her work, or if you're looking for local creatives to follow on IG, she's at @sandramackval . If you have questions, she's the best one to ask via email, but I'm also happy to try to help.

Art As A Path : Free art event for teens in Long Island City art studio.

What:  "Art As A Path" is a fun and informal art studio visit plus an open talk/conversation with teens and young adults. The talk would be centered on the idea that it IS possible to follow your call for art as a profession.
Light refreshments will be served.
Covid 19 safety guidelines are encouraged. Artist is fully vaccinated.

When: Saturday October 16th from 3pm-6pm.  The studio will be open during this time for parents and teens to visit.  At 4pm we will have the talk/conversation, followed by a Q&A.

Where: In the artist's studio, located in Long Island City near 24th street and 37th Ave., so you can experience what's like to be in an artist's  place of work. Once you RSVP, you will be sent the full address.

Who:  Sandra Mack-Valencia, a professional full time artist. Interested in sharing her experience and encouraging young creative minds to follow their vocation.  http://www.SandraMackValencia.com

**Space is limited. First come first served.  Please RSVP by emailing directly to sapmack@yahoo.com

This project is possible thanks to the City Artist Corps grant.  This award was created to energize New York City's artists and engage the public with arts activities this Summer and Fall.

Neighborhood Chat / Sunnyside farmers market - Saturdays
« on: August 21, 2021, 11:04:51 AM »
In anticipation of the storm tomorrow (8/22/21), and figuring that many vendors won't come to the greenmarket here, I went to the Sunnyside market today and it was quite nice. It's smaller than the JH market, but they have a nice selection.  Hours are 8 am to 3 pm Saturdays during the summer.

Today, Sunday, August 8, 2021, there's a parade on Northern from 69th St. to 86th St. and I believe it's closed to car traffic from 11 am to 4 pm (not exactly sure of the time). Also today is the usual Open Streets program so 34th Ave is closed to car traffic from 8 am to 8 pm.

The 115th had initially announced a few days ago that they would open 34th Ave to cars from 9 am to 3 pm, but then they changed their minds.

If you're planning on driving a car, getting a car service, getting a delivery or taking a bus, be advised it could take longer.

Neighborhood Chat / New Midtown ferry route to IKEA Brooklyn
« on: July 04, 2021, 06:06:18 PM »
The IKEA Brooklyn ferry is back in service and they now have one going from Midtown, at W 39th and 11th. This is on weekends only https://www.nywaterway.com/ikea.aspx

Despite having to go much further to the IKEA Brooklyn, I still think it's a better bet than the small one in Queens.

It seems the way they plan to crack down on the fireworks is to address the suppliers who bring the fireworks into the city in the first place. I don't see any mention of trying to crack down on people who are setting them off.

https://nypost.com/2021/06/09/de-blasio-vows-crackdown-on-dangerous-and-illegal-fireworks/

De Blasio promises to crack down on ‘dangerous’ and illegal fireworks

"The city will crack down on dangerous and noisy illegal fireworks after Roman candles and bottle rockets flooded the city streets during the tumultuous summer of 2020, Mayor Bill de Blasio said Wednesday.

“Each summer, we look forward to the right kind of fireworks … but we also know there’s a real problem with the wrong kind of fireworks,” de Blasio said during his daily virtual press conference.

“Illegal fireworks are noisy, they disrupt the peace in neighborhoods, but they can also be dangerous, and we have to understand how important it is to ensure that illegal fireworks are confiscated, so they can’t do harm to people in communities.”

In June 2020, 8,967 complaints of illegal fireworks were reported to the city’s 311 system from June 1 through June 21, which represents more than 320 times the 28 such calls made during the first three weeks of June 2019.

The mayor said law enforcement will “go after” people taking fireworks from other states, in order for the Big Apple to have a calmer summer compared to last year, when fireworks were set off nearly every night in the five boroughs.

“We’re going after the people who bring the fireworks into New York City to begin with,” Hizzoner said.

“We’re getting right at the source. … This is what is going to help us have a safer summer.”

The fireworks task force will have 32 officers, including 12 FDNY fire marshals and 10 deputy sheriffs, according to Sheriff Joseph Fucito. They will work in cooperation with state police in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, said Fucito.

“What the task force is looking to do is to develop information on who the major suppliers are,” he said Wednesday during the morning press conference.

“We’re going to look to interdict these illegal fireworks as they come into New York City — so, if we can get them before they get into the city, it’s a good thing for the people. We also want to target the sellers who peddle the illegal fireworks.”
