Neighborhood Chat / Re: stationary store closing aisles is so annoying!!!
« on: December 21, 2021, 08:37:43 PM »
The new store is at 84-26 37th Ave and it's not the same owner as the stationery store. The new owner is a really lovely man and totally open to suggestions about what to stock, etc. They're still in soft opening phase.

One more suggestion - if you're looking for a home testing kit and can't find one to purchase anywhere, I read they are supposed to be giving out the home test kits at every NYC testing site. You can find the list here https://twitter.com/votejgr/status/1472965042563952642?s=20

Check the poster - but there's one on 37th Ave and 104th St., one at NYCHA Woodside on Newtown Ave, and on Wed. only there's a pop up at the Queens Museum. What's unclear is if you have to wait on the same long lines if you only just want to pick up a home test.

My other advice if you're looking to protect yourself is to get a great mask that fits you. If you want to try out different kinds, there's something called the N95 Project. https://www.projectn95.org/

I also read a bunch of advice from various people and ended up with this one, a KF94 in large https://www.amazon.com/BOTN-Protective-Safety-4-Layer-Adjustable/dp/B0947MJHFC
It seems pretty good and gets good reviews but I'm not an expert :)

If you have a Twitter account, you can create a list of accounts of Covid experts and epidemiologists. Or just find a list that someone else has already created and follow their list.
You can start with some of these accounts:

https://twitter.com/DrTomFrieden
https://twitter.com/MackayIM
https://twitter.com/PeterHotez
https://twitter.com/Laurie_Garrett
https://twitter.com/mugecevik
https://twitter.com/DrEricDing
https://twitter.com/ashishkjha

If you start a list like that, Twitter will suggest other similar accounts to follow.

You don't need to be interested in tweeting to have a Twitter account. It's actually a good way to follow certain types of news you're interested in, even if you have no intention of tweeting yourself.

Is there any way to find out how Jackson Heights is doing right now with Covid positives, testing or any other measures? Asking because it seems like our vaxx rate was pretty high along with awareness of Covid spread.

You can go on the NYC.gov site and see the numbers. But things are changing so rapidly that the info you see there might already be outdated. For example, the map right now shows 11372 at 5.37% positivity rate (7 day average, Dec. 10-16). BUT since there's a lag in reporting, I am guessing that number has already gone way up. Also don't forget that currently we have a lot of people using the at-home rapid tests whose results wouldn't be reported at all.
https://www1.nyc.gov/site/doh/covid/covid-19-data.page#maps

I think a more accurate rate to look at would be hospitalizations for Covid, and not including people who test positive when they go to the hospital for another condition. I'm not sure those numbers are available.

Unfortunately due to the spread of Omicron, it seems like we have to think about testing regularly again. Here's a list of mobile sites open this weekend pasted below. There are the other usual brick and mortar sites as well.

Neighborhood Chat / Re: Trader Joe's Location Requests
« on: December 17, 2021, 09:21:05 AM »
If you're talking about the rumor on a JH Facebook group, the way I saw it was that it was a rumor being floated by one person only. When pressed, she first said she heard it from a clerk at SuperFresh, and then later she claimed she had read it online, but didn't provide a link, and now she's saying she read it in the "local papers." (When I googled "Aldi" + "Jackson Heights" nothing comes up that indicates one is in the works.)

So yeah, sounds like a rumor and nothing more. Of course I'd love it if it were true as it would add something new to the neighborhood instead of the same-old in terms of grocery stores or pharmacies.

Neighborhood Chat / Re: Art supplies store
« on: December 15, 2021, 01:28:51 PM »
They already had their first class on Monday night of this week - figure drawing, or at least that's what showed on their IG (I am not certain if they had it or if it got rescheduled). Also they are making room to have gallery space where they can show the work of local artists. It's not really a gallery in the traditional sense but there is wall space to hang artwork -- above the shelving areas where the supplies are displayed. So you'd look up to see the work, which will hang from molding hooks supported by the existing molding.

There is a credit card surcharge of 3% on purchases, so bring cash if it bothers you to pay a surcharge. I understand why they are passing the charge on to the customer. Otherwise the store pays the fee, or else the products have to be priced higher.

Neighborhood Chat / Re: PLEASE READ: JHL to say goodbye
« on: December 09, 2021, 09:24:45 AM »
Thank you heartily to all the administrators, past and present, for all the time, dedication and work!

Your efforts were a true gift to us that made this wonderful neighborhood a community.  ;D
Sometimes a divided community BUT everyone had the opportunity to be heard.
I will miss this site.  :(

Thank you! It's nice to know our efforts were appreciated :)

Neighborhood Chat / Re: Hi is this site still shutting down?
« on: November 18, 2021, 04:07:57 PM »
I read a while ago that this site is shutting down at the end of the month. So sad!!
Is it still happening?

Yes, it's shutting down at the end of December 2021. PLEASE READ: JHL to say goodbye

Astorians, our sister site, is also shutting down. Shutting down Astorians.com

Merm, who owns both sites, was amazingly generous from the day I contacted her in August of 2007 asking her how we could get a site in Jackson Heights like the already successful Astorians.com. I can't believe 14 years passed so quickly!

THANK YOU TO ALL.

Neighborhood Chat / Re: Conversation about Mid- day changes to Open Streets
« on: September 24, 2021, 11:56:19 AM »
Probably won't make sense to end Open Streets now, since soon every single school on 34th Ave. is going to be using those streets for outdoor recess, inshallah.  ;D

Sounds dangerous with the ebikes, mopeds, bikes and scooters routinely going much faster than 5 mph and weaving in and out.

Restaurants & Food / Re: Best salads in JH
« on: September 22, 2021, 09:03:14 AM »
Lately, I've been really into big salads from the likes of by Chloe, Chopt, etc.. What are recommendations for really good salads in JH? I have enjoyed the kale ones at Laly's, but can't think of any other standouts at the moment.

I can't think of any, but if you're looking to make your own, Lemon Farm at 78th St. and 37th Ave has all sorts of interesting add ons and salad items. :)

I've seen St. Mary's recommended, although haven't tried it myself. They do pickups.

Also, if you're on Facebook, join a "Buy Nothing" group. There are two for Jackson Heights - one for the east and one for west. The group you end up in depends on your home address. https://www.facebook.com/groups/235302994042958
