Neighborhood Chat / Re: CITIZEN APP??
« on: October 09, 2021, 05:31:22 PM »
this stuff has always been occurring in our neighborhood AFAICT.
The neighborhood is pretty safe. Just pay attention to your surroundings, avoid known problem areas after dark, and you'll be fine. Jackson Heights is a great safe neighborhood, and 99% of the community members behave like yourself.
The app is just making you aware of random little incidents you never would have been aware of previously.

Not sure if its the same guy, but a man got into our building 2 nights in a row last week around 3-4am and stole packages..

I think it's been great for the neighborhood and thoroughly enjoy 34th being pedestrian. this sounds like great news

Evidently its not just a NYC phenomenon. I‘ve read about this going on across the country from cities to rural areas as well.

Palomita, First off thank you for all you and other healthcare professionals have done during this difficult time. We are forever grateful to your service and sacrifice. Also, thank you for sharing your knowledge and insight with the community to help keep us safer.

Wear a mask properly, at all times, when outside. Full stop. Nothing to discuss or debate here. We have lost too many people in our community to this virus. The least you can do is properly wear a mask outside.

It's time to defund the police. Money needs to be spent on education, healthcare, mental health, and revitalizing our communities. We don't need militarized police departments anymore.

Glad to hear crime is down, this is comforting.

Is crime going up recently over the past couple of weeks? I recently started using the Citizen App to keep an eye on what's going on around our area, and I'm seeing lots of incidents being reported of people with a knife, a stabbing, etc. Wasn't sure if this was typical and I just wasn't aware of it before, or if we are starting to see more crime?

I went for a jog yesterday morning, but I'm rethinking if it's a good idea or not to get out. Maybe it's safe, however I don't think the debate has been settled yet on how long it stays suspended in the air, how easily it is transmitted through the air, etc. There's still so much not known about the virus at this point, and guidance seems to be getting revised frequently..

Yes, everyone should be wearing a mask. They are effective at helping to protect you, although not a silver bullet by any means.
It seems the communication early on was intentionally very misleading around masks, I think to ensure health care professionals had a supply.

Actually, I played a bit more with this site, and it appears to be a consistent pattern. I randomly changed the dates to various time points e.g. in 2019, and the pattern is identical: Corona is a big outlier, followed by Elmhurst, and to a lesser extent JH, Sunnyside/Woodside. So there is probably some underlying/preexisting issue, but not necessarily coronavirus. That's not to downplay it though.

Interesting - thanks for looking into it further. I wonder what causes Corona to consistently be an outlier.
That's a big relief if they're not experiencing the magnitude of cases I initially thought from first glance. Tough time for our communities, hoping Elmhurst Hospital and their medical personnel are receiving the support they need.

Is the helicopter(s) flying over Jackson Heights this afternoon a medical helicopter transporting patients out of Elmhurst Hospital to other facilities? Appears to be circling back over towards Elmhurst Hospital. Thankfully Elmhurst Hospital appears to be getting much needed support/assistance

Does anyone know good community charities or organizations that can help those in need during this time? Organizations that can help provide food, medical care or monetary aid to those in Corona or even Jackson Heights that need it during this pandemic that we can make a donation to?

I believe the city has data on certain conditions/diseases at the below link/database.
Although not explicitly listed as coronavirus, there's a way to look at "Influenza-Like Illness" (ILI) in this database by zip code. This would almost certainly be Coronavirus cases even though they may not be officially tested and confirmed as such.
I think you can look at the data updated through a day or so ago, so seems it is updated timely.
I'll have to play around with it later today when I have some time, but I saw someone was able to show "ILI" by zip code across the city. Corona, Queens was a big outlier compared to all other zip codes
