Neighborhood Chat / Re: Attempted Carjacking: 37th Avenue

Scary! I'd try again to file a police report. If you still get resistance, contact Jessica Ramos' office or Danny Dromm to facilitate.

this isn't exactly breaking news, but what was once one of the nicer South Asian restaurants in the neighborhood has morphed into a steam table joint -- one with no posted menu, no less. a far smaller selection than either Raja or Maharaja, but there are meat options.
so how is the food there now?

Neighborhood Chat / Re: Finally, a Community Center!!!
« on: June 14, 2021, 07:17:15 AM »
Any kind of center needs to be started by political sources to get all of the funds for services if it is to be open to the general public.
Not necessarily. The community can absolutely help start a center. The biggest obstacle is finding affordable space. If the community can help in finding very affordable space, Sunnyside already has the know how and expertise in securing funding and grants. It would need to be around $20/psf with some credits toward the build out of the space.
Electeds usually aren't going to be the ones to find this.

If you guys can find an adequate space and a landlord that will provide a very affordable rent, let me know. I would be happy to get see how we can get Sunnyside Community Services involved in setting up and running the location.

Neighborhood Chat / Re: Vaccines Are Here!
« on: February 27, 2021, 03:00:40 PM »
I got my first jab at Citifield this past Wednesday.
8PM appointment. My spouse who joined to just be there with me left after two hours of queueing outside. I finally went up the escalator at 11PM, queued in another line and around 11:30PM finally sat with someone who took all of my details including documentation confirming eligibility. Another queue and finally received by jab at 12:30AM.
My appointment was rescheduled twice due to vaccine delivery delays from the bad ice/snow storms across the nation. They had previously been administering Moderna at this site but now shifted to Pfizer because that is what they were able to secure.
I have no context to say if the time it took on Wednesday was typical or not but giving the folks here the benefit of doubt that the confluence of delivery delays, supply issues, staffing shortages, etc. all resulted in extra long delays.
The staff, stretched as they were, were empathic coming out to the line from time to time to bring ahead anyone having difficulty standing, wheelchair bound, elderly, etc.
I'm hopeful that they are able to scale up the site properly by the time my second jab on the 13th comes around. But I would happily spend another 4 hours to leave this miserable memory of a time behind.

I was raised on that side of the neighborhood. My older sister's wedding reception was at Bruno's. It was quite a nice place in it's time. Dante's was around even longer than Bruno's and we had nice family events there too.
same! grew up on 87th street and worked at the McDonald's on 88th Street while in High School.

There's a gofundme that appears to be legit. I believe it was mentioned in one of the news articles. https://www.gofundme.com/f/mother-of-3-taken-away-too-soon-by-a-stray-bullet?utm_source=customer&utm_campaign=p_cp+share-sheet&utm_medium=copy_link_all

Thank you for sharing, just donated.

I just saw online that Angel Indian has added meat dishes to their menu.
Also the new menu says they are open 7 days a week.
that makes me sad that they added meat dishes to their menu...

"The new seating on Mott Street is Rockwell Group’s sixth outdoor-dining installation, and the first one shared by several restaurants.

Another communal dining cluster is scheduled for later this month. It will radiate from the intersection of 37th Road and 74th Street in Jackson Heights, in the part of Queens that had the highest concentration of illness from Covid-19. Like the businesses of Chinatown, the Nepalese, Bangladeshi and Indian restaurants on those blocks have been slow to exploit the new outdoor dining rules."

Really cool news.

Neighborhood Chat / Re: Subway Masks Mandantory Yey but.................
« on: August 07, 2020, 09:29:16 AM »
I heard about the required by law of mask wearing on the subway and that is great news! However, i was on the 7 today and one guy had no mask in sight so I switched to the next car and another guy was eating and drinking coffee- no mask in sight. Same thing with others on my way home. Did they not get the message????

MTA needs to fine those without masks and policing the trains if we are to get over this.
I get where you are coming from but if you have a mask on AND are far away from them, you have little to no reason to worry.

Are there are stores on 37th Avenue between 74th Street and 82nd Street that are holdouts and date back to the 1960s?
What do you mean?

Did anyone tune in? I did not. Wondering how it went and if Stew spoke/mentioned anything of significance.
