Finally, a Community Center!!!
« on: May 26, 2021, 11:19:26 AM »
This has to be the time in this term for JH electeds to give us what most other Queens communities have- a real Community Center. It has to happen now. What does it look like? What do people want? All ages and abilities, babes and seniors, tweens, teens. Young athletes
and new athletes of any age. Computer centers and dancing, a senior center, after school programming. Programs for fathers. And for mothers. Town halls. Voting. All kinds of post school classes. And could we dream about a pool??? We need and deserve this for our community which wants a 365day a year place to exercise and much, much more.

Which candidate is going to bring it???

Other communities in Queens have enviable places for year long sports, classes, all ages meetups and general community meetings. Here are just a few of the facilities that are some miles away and have full season use of indoor (and some outdoor) spaces that Jackson Heights does not. The question is are we in JH undeserving?? Who has the momentum to change this??

 - Sunnyside Community Services  43-31 39th Street Sunnyside, New York sysny.org

 - Maspeth Town Hall 53-37 72nd Street Maspeth, NY 11378 maspethtownhall.org/

 - Long Island City Y 32-23 Queens Blvd. LIC ymcanyc.org/locations/long-island-city-ymca

 - Ridgewood Y 69-02 64th Street Ridgewood, NY ymcanyc.org/locations/ridgewood-ymca

 - Cross Island Y  238-10 Hillside Ave. Bellerose, NY  ymcanyc.org/locations/cross-island-ymca

This would be great.  Imagine a local election with candidates that actually fight for local community.  I could care less About what they think of hot bottom national topics or national ambitions.

You give me a candidate that platforms on these 6 local topics, they win in a landslide!

1) community center
2) make sure humans don’t piss and shit in the street
3) take care of the aggressive drunk males around diversity plaza/post office/Burger King
4) cleaner garbage cans/streets
5) drinking water turned on at travers park/keep are ONLY park clean
6) remove obnoxious permanent vendors around subway station

That’s it, simple platform

Interesting point that you make.

It's far easier to "virtue signal" by taking a stance on big national and international concerns...than dealing with and trying to solve local issues. Which are fraught with contrary opinions.  But truly affect the day to day lives of those who vote for the politician.

I would suggest a location  The former bank on the corner of 73 street and Broadway.  It is a beautiful space that should be preserved

What about simply, to begin with, pop up centers in the various empty storefronts (some have been vacant for years) that abound in the neighborhood?

ex-Famous Famiglia Pizza in the Roosevelt Ave Subway Station stop...springs to mind.

Perhaps, with the focus of press attention, the MTA could be made amenable (or even forced) to support such a community-minded project.

That large MTA owned space has been sitting empty and sad and unused for a long time now.

It's very hot today and yesterday. Last weekend, it was very wet. It's almost summer which most people consider our better weather here in NYC and yet, the Open Streets are inhospitable when the weather is bad. A COMMUNITY CENTER would solve these needs! Imagine being able to swim on a day like this? Play a game with your kids? Run laps on an overhead track or join a dance class or have lunch with your senior friends or your parenting group?

Please talk with all of the electeds about this and ask why we don't have a facility in Jackson Heights that is an all weather community center? The MTA could be a temporary solution but they would have to want this and am not sure they are a government agency. The bank on 73rd is still a bank last I knew. There is a block long track of land with a parking lot on it next to the 115th Precinct that is city owned and could be built on top of - or that is my understanding. Some of the car sales operations on Northern Blvd. also have generous footprints and maybe would relocate?

Jackson Heights, we need this and we deserve this because most of the rest of the city has one!!!

A community center would be amazing. Everything you listed below, including classes, exercise space, a lecture hall/events space, community events for a wide range of ages and interests, after-school programming, etc. I share your pool dream too! That would be just amazing.

Shekar Krishnan has made this one of his priorities. It's something I'd definitely support enthusiastically!

MAKE THE ROAD NEW YORK does function as a kinda community center.

It's @ 92-10 Roosevelt Ave.

Perhaps you should reach out and work with them.

Love, love, love Make the Road and their ideas for a community center are great! A big difference is that they are not tending towards physical activity, senior activities, dance classes or many other activities that the NYC centers do in other neighborhoods. Check out some of those listed by me previously. Make the Road as a group are excellent fundraisers though, and that is another thing to praise them for as they bring in the $$$. Their work with immigration is stellar. Look at the recent ads on NY1 for Sunnyside Community Services and see how welcoming and diverse in range of activities they are for a typical NYC center and their facility is not fancy in the least!

If you guys can find an adequate space and a landlord that will provide a very affordable rent, let me know. I would be happy to get see how we can get Sunnyside Community Services involved in setting up and running the location.

Thanks for the offer about Sunnyside. I personally think they run a terrific organization. They do it with lots of support from various electeds and the Dept of Aging, DOE for PreK and the meals groups, etc. Any kind of center needs to be started by political sources to get all of the funds for services if it is to be open to the general public. The community would be very supportive, I believe, once things started happening. This weekend AGAIN - third in a row- had sub-par weather making physical activities outdoors less attractive. A Community Center is the golden ticket that we need here in Jackson Heights. OS somewhere maybe later, maybe smaller like the rest of NYC?

Folks have already clearly mentioned that Jackson Heights can have both. OS and a community center.

A community center does not need to have an anti-OS agenda.

People should be aware that their agendas are very obvious. And hiding agendas behind supporting Community Centers won't succeed.

Would love BOTH!!! But the Community Center is the highest need first. Then a full impact study
done on the whole neighborhood impact of 34th Ave Open Streets post pandemic and tailored for
a new reality. The Community Center need is what we know most about now though. All in plain
view here.

Not necessarily. The community can absolutely help start a center. The biggest obstacle is finding affordable space. If the community can help in finding very affordable space, Sunnyside already has the know how and expertise in securing funding and grants. It would need to be around $20/psf with some credits toward the build out of the space.
Electeds usually aren't going to be the ones to find this.
