Miss Heather brings her sharp eye on a visit to Jackson Heights.

Miss Hater...oops, Heather is so entwined with herself and her hidden agenda she conveniently choose to walk around the shops in the neighborhood instead of walking around "the neighborhood".

Greenpoint???  You got to be kidding me... I heard that since the 1978 discovery of Americas worst (or 2nd worst) spill of about 20 million gallons of black gold is 50% cleaned up...Cool.  It will be clean by the time my eldest son starts collecting Social security!

Green means not Green at all...57 acres of contamination

I? What makes you think I would know anything about a leather store? I’ll have you know I’ve promenaded up and down 82nd street a number of times and do not even recall Top Gun Leather. (By the way, did I mention I visited that new London Boutique on Roosevelt and 78th Saturday night. The manager/associate Anthony was very friendly. But that is a story for another thread.) Sadly, Heather came to Jackson Heights with agenda, and honestly I cannot blame her. The audacious, insulting Jack Heights billboard in Williamsburg she mentioned in another article was fresh in her mind, and it clouded her perspective on a great neighborhood. She probably would have liked us better had someone handed her a cholado or mango lassi, but at least our trademark tempura hot dogs got promotion. Our schlock stores may not inspire great pride of place, but our food certainly does. I do want to pick up one of those crazy hijab Barbie knapsacks though.

I didn't know 82nd street had a leather store.  I have to go there next weekend to see what else is new on 82nd besides buying underwear.

wow. guys I did not think there was any agenda from Miss Heather except to be totally and completely snarky and sarcastic.  And she was.  Her photo journey of Roosevelt Ave. is how I think of Roosevelt (although, I missed seeing the chador Barbie-way cool.)

She said she had fun in her comments on her site.

NYCNative, I'm beginning to worry about you.  Her site is called NewYorkShitty.  I think she's clear on her agenda.   Although I do have to agree I think Greenpoint is a crappola place to live or visit.  There are film stages there that are loathed by most film crews for being next to toxic factories.  The area is just fugly.  Nothing like our historic buildings exists in Greenpoint.  But if home is where the heart is, then that's her home.

mark, you have to promenade on Roosevelt Ave. to find Top Gun, I think.   Those stores are hysterically kitchsy.  I can see them in the Village doing great business.  And I do want to hear about New London Boutique.... lunch???

I don't see any criticism in Miss Heather's post, other than the general social criticism present in all of her work.  I think she had a good time in JH and was amused by some of what she found.  I was amused too, and am happy she shared her discoveries.

OK..How's this one?

Why is the G train only 4 cars long? As I land in the famous Greenpoint I find myself with a peculiar aroma.  Is it?, No couldn't be.  Anyway as I pass by fabulous vinyl siding edifices I ask myself, wow, What is that smell?.  As I crossed the street and hear the crushing sounds of crack vials I stopped for a second and the Kielbasa truck almost ran me over so I called him crazy and said something in some other language but I understood what he wanted to express (he gave the finger).  Maybe he is from Katowice?

I walked toward Mcguiness and find a sewage plant right near some new condos, I'm sure the residents are thrilled!  The dirty streets remind me of...gee, what is that stench?  By this time I'm getting hungry and as I walked a bit over to a place and it hit me...It smells like...$%^&.  All in all I had a fun in Greenpoint..Oh there's a cab, let me go to Jackson Heights and get me a medium rare churrasco and a ceviche.  Next week Williamsburg, aka most Toxic place in America to live (even more than Greenpoint?), which is right next to?, you guessed it Greenpoint. Ahhh the sewer aromas.

Just kidding guys, just having some fun...just like Miss Heather. ::)

Hey, where are the photos??

Citifield is coming

I shot this on my way to College Point...It's amazing seeing it emerging like this...

the hipsters and wannabes flocked to williamsburg 5+ years ago. they followed the artsy, cool, experimental crowd. The only reasons they were there in the first place was because rent was cheap and it was close to manhattan. Well, willliamsburg before that was full of factories, construction, warehouses. There is an extreme amount of pollution in the streets, and even still the trucks that go through there destroy the air/ground.  It really is a naturally terrible place to live.

so the biggest reason people are living there now is that they are chasing the people they think are cool. what do you know? they are actually chasing them out with the prices.... Luckily for them, there are at least 4 or 5 huge million dollar apartment buildings being put up there. it's going to seriously mess up their real estate market. Now, all the people overpaying for crappy apartments will be paying a correct amount for a really nice place. and all those crappy places are going to remain crappy and lose all their value.

greenpoint is cool because of the eastern european population, but it isnt much better than williamsburg and the kids are spilling into there now. It was actually one of the 3 neighborhoods I was considering before I moved here (the other ft. greene).

I don't want to say too much to promote the area yet. I need the prices to stay low. in short, the infrastructure and population are the strong points. id like to get involved in getting more new neighbors - but not too many.

In the last 8 years I have done substantial work in Williamsburg...mostly Asbestos and Lead prior to converting those factories into Lofts (by others, not me).  Prior to that in the 90's we did hundreds of environmental assessments (phase I studies) - it was so bad some our clients told us to loose the reports and we still got paid in full (never heard from those clients).  Generally, and this is based on my personal experience, most people saying how "super duper great Williamsburg is" were people from Williamsburg or those with a financial / personal interest (realtors, Landlords, developers or people that found a great deal and wanted a different crowd to move in)  I know quite a few that bought low and flipped and made lots of money G-d bless 'em.  Unfortunately if anyone purchased anything there in the last 3 or four years got robbed.  Brooklyn is not Manhattan no matter how the "special agenda" group attempt to make you believe it.  The time is here, if you have the cash you can buy for as little as 50 cents on the dollar on some of these "D'lux condos" (and you still may be paying too much).

There is truly a very big problem with the environmental issues in both of these places, Greenpoint and Williamsburg and they have only exposed the surface.  Political powers that be have been able to soften the blow but as more and more people are finding out some will have to make due.  On another note anytime your rent roll cannot cover a balance of 70% Mortg (30% equity) plus maintenance and any incidentals / vacancies plus provide you with a modest monthly return then you probably didn't get a good deal (Specially in this market).  If you occupy the unit for at least the duration of a flat market and truly find enjoyment in any place you purchase then it's more a matter of "value in use" and the price paid becomes almost secondary.

I went over to 82nd Street and Roosevelt Avenue yesterday and saw that Top Gun Leather is indeed on 82nd. I then went into America’s 99¢ Store and bought a so-called “Chador Barbie” bag. Mine is different than the one in the picture in that it is rectangular, and thus looks less like a knapsack; the background is pink rather than blue; and the larger doll picture can only be seen from the waist up.

Look at her shirt and see that she is not Barbie at all but Fulla, the fashion doll that originated in Syria. See her Web page and read the Wikipedia article about her. Just another piece of crap for my collection, and likely a knockoff at that.
