Airplane Noise (Part 1)
« on: April 19, 2008, 05:29:40 PM »
Does anyone know the deal with the airplane noise on certain days?  I may be crazy, but it seems that every so often (usually on a Saturday) LGA's flight plans seem to change, thus directing way more planes right over my apartment.  Is this purely wind/weather-related, or is there some sort of  schedule I should be aware of?  just curious...

Funny, I was just thinking the same thing.  When the first few flew over I kind of enjoyed the sound.  Now that they are coming every few minutes, I no longer am.

Here is the info about today's noise.
"LaGuardia Airport's runway 13-31 will be closed for construction work from 12:01 am Saturday, April 19th 2008 until 7:00 am. Sunday, April 20th. As a result, if the wind is from the south during that period, jets will take off over Jackson Heights causing a noise condition. "

And I think there's a list-serv you can subscribe to so you will be warned about future runway closings.

P.S. I just wanted to note that the irony of your alias "soundslover" did not escape me.

Shelby2, thanks so much for the info!  I know... it certainly is ironic that I'm soundslover in this case.  you know what they say: the opposite of love is not hate; it is indifference!

Thanks for the info.  I feel like I'm living on the runway.

Any idea how late the noise will continue?  The baby's bedtime is approaching fast........

FYI the airplane noise is also really bad during the US Open. They divert the usual flight patterns because of the blimps!

that's the only time I ever notice it. but it depends on the block you're on also.  I think it's louder in the 60/70s vs the 80/90s.  Anyone else notice that?

The only time I hear the air traffic is when the routes are redirected for whatever reason.  At times, particularly on weekends, it has seemed as if a plane was ready to land on our roof!  Luckily, this doesn't happen frequently, so it doesn't bother us so much.

Has anyone been in the Waldbaum's mini mall when the planes are coming in for a landing or taking off?  That's pretty scary!

Yes! I was walking out to my car and just happened to look up as a plane was coming in... I thought that thing was going to take my head off!  :o

As a literal Jackson Heights Lifer, I can tell you that I've managed to tune them out except at 6 on a Saturday morning!

For fun in high school we used to time them using the 'rainy weather' runway. Every 90 seconds. I did it again a few months ago. Every 90 seconds. Thank goodness the 21st century hasn't improved on that.

Now if they would only put in another runway NOT over this area.

And where is the Port Authority money for the airport impacted area, huh, Helen?

Sorry for the mixed thread. Couldn't resist.

I live in the Dunolly and this morning at 6am I woke up to what sounded like a plane taking off on 34th Avenue. I finally got out of bed at 7 and since then have been jotting down the time when each plane take off. They've been taking off every two minutes since 7am.  I've called the Port Authority airport noise complaint hot line to file a complaint.  If anyone else if motivated to call here is the number 718-533-5615.  In typical NYC fashion its an automated system.

We noticed it too.  Is there anything going on today that would have re-routed the air traffic?

Thanks yford for the telephone number. I'm definitely one of those people who is sensitive to  noise. I guess the more calls they get the better!
