The flight pattern is different today.  I called LaGuardia and the sweet (NOT) woman who answered said "call the FAA, here's the number".  So I called and FAA said call airport directly and ask for noise complaints.  So I called back and asked and sweet lady said "there is no department like that."  Then she hung up.

good public relations!

Thanks I called. I don't anything will happen.  I would just like to know why the flight pattern is different today: Shea Stadium game, tennis at Flushing Meadow etc. etc.  There's usually a reason when flights get diverted.  You would think someone would be able to answer that.  But NOOOOOOOOOOOO such luck.

Occasionally certain runways are closed due to special events, but more often it's due to runway construction or maintenance work.

CB3 has a page dedicated to this topic here, but it doesn't show anything for this weekend.  I don't know how often it is updated.

There is apparently a notification email list for this (click here to subscribe), but I'm not on the list so I can't vouch for its reliability.

I've lived here for 8 years, so let me try to be helpful about the airplane noise issue.  Every other summer, on weekends -- and this is that summer -- LaGuardia shuts down one of its runways for maintenence.  That means some of its planes have to take off over land rather than over water (as they usually do) and this means noisy take-offs.  There's no point complaining or calling political officials or complaint lines.  They can do nothing.  This is strictly an FAA issue.  And though it's annoying, it needs to be done.   After all, most of you do fly and I'm sure you want to depart from well-maintained runways.  It ain't pleasant, but learn to live with it.  Or try to leave the 'hood on those alternate summer weekends and visit other parts of the city or Nepal.....

for me personally, I do not mind.  having grown up near JFK, I am used to planes.  it was especially joyful when being out in the schoolyard during recess and seeing the concorde taking off or landing.  living here in JH, the plane noise just brings back my childhood memories...
Well, I try my best
To be just like I am
But everybody wants you
To be just like them

I rather be
A free man in my grave,
Than livin' as a
Puppet or a slave

Well, the plane noise woke up my toddler a little after 6 AM, and naptime was... ummm... not naptime.   Seems to have calmed down now.

So we were up and out early in the cool weather, and we've been trapped in the air conditioning all day.  Sure hope we are not getting up at 6 AM again tomorrow.....

I've become desensitized to the airplane noise.  I agree that there is nothing people can do.  The billion dollar airline companies are not going to change for "little people" in Jackson Heights.

Keep in mind that there are neighborhoods nearby (Flushing, East Elmhurst, Woodside) that deal with this noise day in and day out.  We live very close to the airport, and are very fortunate that we only face this noise on occasional summer weekends.

ToddG, I wholeheartedly agree.

In Jackson Heights, this seems to happen maybe once every three months.  When I used to live not more than a mere 20 blocks away in Woodside, this seemed to happen 3 times every month.  It is much better over here, and I grin and bear it because if need be, I could walk to the Airport to catch a flight.

It's nice to finally get an explanation as to why this happens because of runway construction... now I'm somewhat curious as to why it's so bad in Woodside.

Any insight anyone???  My only recollection was that it seemed to coincide with storms just offshore.

You can get information on LaGuardia on the Port Authority of NY and NJ website.   Check the the Airport Construction Notice link at the bottom of the page.

Looking at this site it seems that they are not allowing planes to land and the noise is from the planes circling.

If you're a true city person, you'll won't even notice it after awhile.

I grew up across the street from an above ground train station in the 70s. We'd hear the train screach into the station each day. It never bothered me. Only when I moved to Queens in the early 80s did the quiet freak me out.

Like Don Corleone says "Whatsamatta with you? Be a man!"
