Just finished my first grandma slice from Pepinos!  Two thumbs up for both the grandmas and the regular.  (had to get two in the name of science. ..)

They're in Woodside on 61st Street between Roosevelt and Woodside Avenues near the el.  I must submit my vote for their pizza, too!  Sometimes I will walk or drive from Astoria to grab a slice or two from there.  Their sauce is the perfect blend of sweet and tangy and the crust thin and crisp.

Kate, the Pepinos we're talking about is the new one over here in Jackson Heights not the Woodside one (which I'm sure is also good if they have similar cooks.)  Next to HSBC bank used to be Thomas pizza.  Well now it's Pepinos.  Nothing to look at.  I almost didn't go in but these boards get my mouth watering some time.  Glad I did.  The Grandma pie is highly seasoned with oregano etc.  Has fresh mozzarella on it instead of shredded and this is the part I love best: carmalized onions in the sauce.  YUMMMMMY.

PS  Maybe IN THE NAME OF SCIENCE should be a restaurant here.  We'd all go!!!

Since I've already confessed my pizza addiction, I wanted to add that I finally had a pie from La Cabana (Argentinean/Italian restaurant.  Nice.  I got the plain margarita pie.  Next time I'll ask them to cook it longer so the crust is more browned but it was tasty.  So La Cabana is a thumbs up for both their steaks and pies. And I like that they play music but not so loud that you can talk.  Pepinos has a better selection of pies but La Cabana has a really nice ambience. It's definitely worth a visit.

I like Porto Bello in Astoria. 

What do you have against Peppino's?   Tell the truth... are you a "bit" of a snob?  "NOT THAT THERE'S ANYTHING WRONG WITH THAT"! Jerry Seinfeld (although subject matter  was VERY different).

I thoroughly enjoy Peppino's and Gianni's (the two local places I order from the most).

But I agree with Spanishfish, Lombardi's is on a different level.  It's a good, traditional pizza place (not one of those silly "gourmet" places like Una Pizza Napoletana in the East Village) that uses excellent ingredients and a very hot oven.

The two places that I've heard people rave about most are Grimaldi's and Di Fara in Brooklyn.  Tragically, I've never had a chance to try them.  Among the places I have tried, my favorite is Totonno's at Coney Island.  Closer by, Nick's in Forest Hills is also very good.

I love reading Slice.  And being a pizza snob, myself, I have to agree with both you and Spanishfish about those other pizza joints.  I just hate the trek into the City.  But when ever I'm in the City for business and near by the better pizza parlors, I make a beeline to them. 

One day I'll have to check out DiFara, too.

Patsy's is also good. Though I didn't know they had a location in Harlem. I know of the one in Chelsea and across the street from Dylan's Candy Bar on 60th street in Manhattan. Other than Patsy's and Lombardi's, there isn't really any other good pizza I've had that seems "authentically Italian" well, as much as it can considering pizza is an American invention, or so they say.

We heard that Gianni's was good, but they wouldn't deliver to us when we ordered from Delivery.com so they've lost major points with us now. Delivery.com called us to say we had to cal up Gianna's to confirm the order. What is the point of online food ordering if you have to then pick up the phone right after you've clicked your mouse? Annoying. They seem to have removed themselves from the Delivery.com service now. They've lost one potential customer already...This is 2008, you know?

So yes, I guess I'm a pizza snob.

Being a pizza snob means you're part of an elite group of foodies.  The hell with those people think because they eat exotic foods that they're the true foodies. HA.

I don't get the Delivery.com thing.  Is it like purchasing movie tickets online?  I have to go check it out now because I don't spend enough time online as it is... I need more sites to become involved with.  HELP ME.... I CAN'T GET OFF THE RIDE!!!!

Back to local pizza news, it appears that the wonderful Peppino's, which branched out from Woodside to replace Thomas Pizza just a few months ago, is changing again.  It is now becoming Due Fratelli.

I noticed that the take out menu had Due Fratelli but I didn't think to ask if it was just a name change or change in owners.  Do you know todd?

I have heard second hand that the pizza is definitely different, and that they're using the prices out of the takeout menu instead of the prices on the sign inside the store.  So that suggests to me new management, but I haven't been inside to ask.
