It is indeed the same company. I'm not sure what IDT does, it seems to have fingers in lots of pies. I'll check it out and get back to you.

I looked up IDT Corp in Wikipedia and IDT Energy is an ESCO and sub of the parent. Basic industry seems to be phonecards.

I wrote ConEd about the Knockers, and here's their response. It seems you can be put on a list so that you will not be hassled by Esco's....She says...

This seems to be a worker from an ESCO (Energy Supply Company) who was probably trying to switch you over to their company. Do not share your Con Edison account number with anyone unless you are willing to sign up with another company. Once they have your account number they can switch you over without any other consent from you. If you would like us to add a block onto your account so you cannot be switched without contacting us, please let us know. If you would like more information on the different ESCOs you can visit: http://www.poweryourway.com/residential_customers.asp. If you have any other questions or concerns, please call us at 1-800-752-6633.

On a related note, Con Ed wants to raise prices again.

Sorry to bring up an old post; I wish I had only saw this sooner.

I was stupid enough to have just handed over my bills to an IDT salesman. After reading everyone's posts, I immediately called up the company to cancel; I was told there would be a 'block'. I then proceeded to call ConEd and have them set up a block on my account in order to prevent any unauthorized switching. Even having done so, I am still concerned as to what will happen. Names and addresses can be easily found within the phone book, but account numbers are a different story :P

I would like to ask what else I can do to make sure nothing goes wrong, and also what will happen now? Will there be any sort of damage done or some such? I apologize if I sound somewhat paranoid.  :embarassed: Hopefully I won't have to worry about unsolicited mails or anything else after today... >:(

So, I remembered reading this thread a while back, and one night a couple of weeks ago a guy knocks on my door and tells me he wants to help me save money on my con-ed bill.  I say I'm not interested, he urges me, I say I don't have time, he says it will just take a minute.  He then insists I go get my con-ed bill.  I say no, and try to close the door, he pushes it.  I get firm, close the door, and promptly call con-ed.  they explain what has been said in the posts above - it's an EBSCO, they are legit, though not from con-ed.  he also warned me that if you show them your bill they can and will convert you to their service.  that doesn't sound legit to me, but I didn't argue.  Then I call 311 and ask about EBSCOs, and they tell me that if I didn't buzz the person it, it's trespassing, and I should call the police.  I didn't want to call 911 because it wasn't an emergency, so I asked to be connected to my local precinct.  The call is connected, and I speak to two different people, both who insist I call 911.  I do, and 15 minutes later two cops show up.  They insist that EBSCOs are legit, and that there's nothing they can do.  I argue that most legitimate companies don't come door to door at 8pm, ask to see bills, or push doors, all to no avail.  I also explained that unless the person who rings my bell is someone I buzzed in, it's solicitation.  they shrug, apologize, and leave.

so, the only point is that EBSCOs are apparently legitimate, though, as everyone has said, they are shady in pratice.  Make sure not to show them a bill, or give them any identifying info.

I think you let Con Ed know what was going on you'll be fine.  For future reference, don't show ANYONE your personal information which includes account numbers etc.  I doubt anything will be done "to you".  I think they just try to get people to switch their accounts to them.

An energy scam guy came to my office today.  He said he was from the "Department of Energy of the U.S."  Most people in my building are of South Asian descent.  As soon as the guy saw me, with my pale skin, he swooshed outta there!

I wonder if these people are actually from IDT.  I think they get into buildings with phony IDs to case them, rob apartments and steal IDs.

My thoughts exactly.

Page up to see my friend's prediction on how IDT scammers would turn into a cover for thieves.  (quoted below.)

A bigger concern, though is when will this pattern turn from quasi-scammers into actual thieves.  There are smart thieves out there who will figure out they can pose as energy re-sellers.  Then they knock on your door and while you go get your bill to show them, they are busy casing the joint.  After all, they already know they can get in the building easily if they are knocking at your apartment door and not ringing the bell from outside.

A close friend who works in the intelligence field says there's usually just a 6-month lag time between when a pattern is established (energy re-sellers become a common sight inside buildings in a neighborhood) to when a new, more dangerous pattern is established (thieves pose as energy re-sellers to gain access to apartments).

Seems like this crossed the threshold into a real scam.  The new scam is that people dressed as ConEd employees are approaching people and offering them a discount if they pay their bill on the spot to one of these people (dressed as ConEd employees).  When people give them money to supposedly pay their bill, the fake ConEd employees then "pay" the account balance with a fake checking account.  For a few days, it appears to the customers when they look online that their account balance has been paid, and then after that it shows that it's unpaid because the fake check is rejected.

The energy re-sellers have figured out how to use this as a cover to be actual thieves.   This happened in Brooklyn in January. Conned: Pair posed as Con-Ed workers for home invasion in Brighton Beach

Tell your neighbors not to open their door to the energy re-sellers!
