We've started to leave the neighborhood when it starts... The loud constant repetition is too stressful. Go to the beach, pool, park, shopping :).

it was much worse in the mid 90s; then a decade or so of peace. chances are the pattern will repeat.

Will the NYTimes write about the noise problem, pushing real estate prices down? Could happen. Should I put my love affair with JH on hold and stay another 5 years in my rent stabilized dump in Williamsburg? Or do I invest in some earplugs? Trying to decide!

Here is an interesting, if slim, article on NYC airports and property values.  Consider your potential address as well, as the noise is not as bad in the 80's as in the 70's.

And depending on your noise aversion, also consider the half a dozen or so parades which go through the neighborhood.  It seems like the more sparsely attended a parade is, the greater the compensating blasting DJ music (pity, bands aren't as prominent as they once were).  And should the Colombians, Ecuadorians or, to a lesser degree, Uruguayans win an international match, then you got the horn blowing and the (baffling) motorcycle revving.

Whether to hold off or not?  Financially, if you are planning to live here for a decent amount of time, the math plays out for you to purchase, no matter how vigorous the pens of the paper of record may be (they destroy good restaurants more than they destroy good neighborhoods).  More importantly, 5 years, at this point in your life, is a measurable chunk of the years you have remaining on this planet.  Don't run out the clock till halftime.

Thanks for the link, Palermo. Good stuff. The map also shows something I forgot to mention: in downtown Flushing its way, way, way worse.

As potentially annoying as these events are: parades and football matches are announced weeks to months in advance and are predictable in their length. and thus you can plan to be around or not.

Airplane noise, if notified at all, appears on a website  0-3 days before with no accountability for how long the disruption happens.

Yeah, game event, parade, garbage truck, car horning and loud music not as bad as the airplanes that constantly fly by every few minutes. And some of them fly so low they even shake the apartment.

Thanks for sharing the map, I have a friends that live in Woodside, this is like a norm for them on weekday, which sometime you notice it if you just wait on the Woodside 7 train station.
