Thank you for asking.  These are the words of Kathy Stevens, the Director of the Catskill Animal Sanctuary.

Fallout for animals:

"Gestation crates.  Veal crates.  Tens of thousands of chickens grown in a single building, sitting in their own filth, the ammonia from their excretions damaging their eyes, lungs, and throats.  Grown so quickly that the chicken industry now knows the percentage of birds that die of violent heart attacks because their organs can't handle the stress of being forced to grow to slaughter weight in just six weeks.  People chop off animals' tails, chop off their toes, chop off their beaks, all without anesthesia, because on modern farms, animals packed together peck and claw and bite each other . . . and god forbid the meat be damaged.  Every aspect of agribusiness is designed to maximize efficiency and profit despite the costs to the "product" (in this case living animals) and the consumer."

Fallout for us:

"I think most of us even know that the consumption of animals products is killing us.  Certainly the link between many forms of cancer, heart disease, stroke, obesity, type 2 diabetes, gout, high cholesterol, and other diet-related health problems Americans suffer from has been part of the public conversation, despite the fact that the medical establishment and the pharmaceutical industry might prefer it not be.  They make money from our sickness."

If you choose to eat animal products then please educate yourselves as to where they are coming from.  Buy them from the Green Market system if you need to eat these things.  The Green Market has a rigorous vetting process whereby the nasty stuff is weeded out.

You can check out their suppliers here:  http://www.grownyc.org/greenmarket/ourfarmers

All I'm saying is that if you choose to eat these things then please do so in the most informed way possible.  The meat available in Jackson Heights (not the Green Market at Travers Park) is probably from questionable sources at best.  If anyone in JH Life is in the local restaurant business and would care to comment, please do.

For 97% of the animals products consumed in this country please watch this video - Glass Walls - by Sir Paul McCartney:
http://www.meat.org/

I do not want to consume suffering, stress, adrenalin, antibiotics, pesticides and fungicides in my food.  I also do not want to exploit the workers in these environments.  The only thing worse than cruelty is delegated cruelty.  No thank you.

I'm glad you asked this important question.

Thanks for posting this Jim!  I have always thought that, if more people saw the wanton cruelty, filth, and massive amounts of pharmaceuticals and radiation used to produce meat that is marketable, they would be horrified.

I don't believe you were judging carnivores, just trying to inform them so they can make better choices.

I love our greenmarket for meat. Aside from there, I do not buy any meat in JH markets (aside from Murray's Chickens, when I can find them) because you can't find antibiotic / free range / certified organic / grass fed stuff. Sadly, that stuff is too expensive for most Americans.

We ordered from Pahal Zan Kosher  in forest hills. Their salads are  SOOOOOOO GOOOOD!! If you blink you will miss this place near the LIRR station. The people here are amazingly nice and they have some good food. They are not open past sundown on fridays and closed saturdays.

@ Madalyn ..I read all of the posts and I found them interesting ...this is my personal view...again...not meant to evoke the fury or anger of anyone and this is simply my point of view because I want to keep the thread / subject friendly, fun and informative about the food and restaurants that we patronize.

We can live off meat only or plants only and excluding either one of those will not manifest into a healthier longer life, regardless of the claims of vegetarians.  Yes, if organic perishables were available at more moderate pricing I would assume more people would reach out to that option.  I know plenty of vegetarians and also those that wont touch anything green on a plate.  We could go on and on about studies on both sides of the vegetarian argument and I do agree that we go too far with hormones injections, genetically altering animals or plant foods (what happened to the long lasting tomatoes?).  :D  I have read hundreds of reports linking environmental issues to health effects, red meat, meat in general, Mercury or other pollutants in our fish and the "fallout".

F' it, you live once...enjoy those things that mentally and emotionally reward you.  Learning how to eat a balance meal and in overall healthy moderation is sometimes difficult but it is achievable.  If an ethical issue evolves because of what you consume than explore it and act on your instincts at first but educate yourself before making an assessment AND always ask a qualified professional before drastically changing your diet.  Seeing an animal slaughtered could awaken your anthropomorphic feelings toward them, and usually for our own selfish reasons wish to do something about it.  We live in a time of the mad scientist but as people become truly educated they become more open minded, I find.  I personally won't impose or attempt to educate people about what my personal beliefs are but I won't apologize for my so called immoral behavior just because I eat meat or fish from my local butcher or shop.

I think the "fall out" subject brought up here in fact is very interesting and would make for a wonderful thread that will arise opinions and possibly entice people to open up and write.  They can relay real time information about ethics, religion, foods, eating habits and health effects but this is not the thread for carnivore, vegeterian or omnivore bashing or demonizing.  In the meantime I have to take a shower and hit the bed due to an early meeting to see an attorney selling his vehicle since mine was wrecked on Monday.  I think I will stop at Keens chop house for a glass (or two) of Merlot and one of those big shrimp cocktail thingies.

Native,

I am in agreement with almost everything you said, except the part about your "immoral" eating habits.  Nobody on this thread alleged anything about the morality or immorality of eating meat.

I would always hope, whatever the issue, that people inform themselves as best they can and then use their own intelligence and instincts to decide how they want to proceed.  There are many pathways to good health and diet is only a part of the picture.

To everyone's good health

A week and a half ago went to Criolla Esquina on Junction Blvd. Argentine grilled meat along the lines of Chivito de Oro along 37th Ave. Great meat and a very cozy feel to it.

I had the most amazing lunch yesterday at Ayada, a Thai restaurant in Elmhurst.   For appetizers we had a raw shrimp salad topped with a sauce made of lime juice, chili, and garlic which was totally fresh and tasty and a crispy duck salad with cashew nuts, pineapple topped with a chili dressing again amazingly flavorful!  For our main course we had sauteed eggplant with ground chicken  a garlic basil sauce which had a wonderful delicate yet spicy flavor, and drunkard noodles with pork, made with a wide rice noodles and basil garlic sauce which was quite scrumptious.  For beverages we ordered iced coffee and iced tea with milk which were like no other iced beverage I have ever tasted!  The tea had a rich reddish color and a slight smokey flavor.  We love spicy but decided to order all  of our dishes in a medium spice but for the bravehearted they have Thai SPICY!!!!!  They deliver in JH up to 34Th Ave and 85Th Street.

Last night for dinner I cooked up a huge pot of arroz con pollo!  I make my arroz con pollo a bit differently.  I marinated chopped boneless skinless chicken thighs with sofrito, cumin, sazon, lime juice, oregano, olive oil, pepper and salt for a couple of hours then seared it in a hot cast iron skillet til brown.  The remaining ingredients........sofrito, red pepper, olives, capers, white wine, carrots, peas, gandules, smoked chorizos, bay leaves, fresh thyme, olive oil, rice and chicken stock.  This is the most amazing arroz con pollo ever!!!!!!!!!!   :D

Buen Apetito!
