Just thought I would formally introduce myself here. I moved to Jackson Heights with my husband & our daughter in October from Michigan. I'm a librarian & I work for Queens Library (feel free to contact me with all your library questions, comments & complaints, I am happy to try & help). My husband's an archivist & our daughter is finishing up 6th grade at IS 230. I am originally from Manhattan & my dad & stepmom still live there.
We moved to Jackson Heights primarily for its wonderful diversity & central location in Queens & every day I find one more reason I love Jackson Heights & Queens in general.
Hope to meet some of you face to face for the July restaurant thing...it sounds like fun.

Hello, TaraLS!

Somehow I know a lot of librarians, but no two-librarian families!  You must have a lot of books!

Welcome to the site and the neighborhood.

We do have A LOT of books & the good (or bad depending on your viewpoint) thing is after moving here in October & getting rid of many, many boxes of books, we are still out of bookshelf space! But I love it!

I tried getting rid of books but as I pruned, the number of books seemed to grow.  I put all the books for the trash back on the shelves and in the closets and now the books and I are at peace.

Anyone here remember the used bookstore on 37th Avenue near the Post Office that was closed down because they displayed the S&M Madonna book.  My son used to work there after school.

My wife and I are in the process of moving to Jackson Heights from Greenpoint/Williamsburg.  We were wondering what there is to do as far as the bar scene.  We are not into going out until 4am, we are more into happy hours and being home by 11pm. (I know we are lame)
I work in the area so I see what goes on on Roosevelt and Northern all hours of the night, but I never noticed the early evening scene.
Are our only options the city or back to Brooklyn??  Any advice would be great.

Hi Joe ! Welcome !

While the early evening bar scene in JH is lacking there are a couple of spots that might suit your needs.

Novo on 37th Ave. bet 78 & 79 has a decent happy hour and good bar tender (Brian) on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Terraza 7 Train Cafe on Glean St. just off Roosevelt Ave & 83rd St. is small, funky, and fun.

Legends on 72nd St. and 35th has draft beer, and old style townie bar feel, and GREAT barbecue (except on Tuesdays)

Cassidy's on 75th and 31st Ave. lots of beer options and food.

Jardi on Northern and 86th St. Good Sangia and GREAT Tappas.

These are the places where I go most often, I am sure there are a couple more. Certainly there are a few folks out there with places to add to the list.

Hi JoeG24.  Welcome to Jackson Heights Life!

Apart from the suggestions provided above by Aronan, nearby Woodside has a nice bar scene.  Cool in Your Code did a Woodside Pub Crawl at some of the more popular ones. What's nice is that these pubs are a hop, skip and a jump from Jackson Heights on the 7 train or Q32 bus.  You can even walk to some of them if you enjoy nice, long walks.  Here's a link to a video from Cool in Your Code:

Woodside Pub Crawl

By the way, they also did a Long Island City Bar Crawl.  You can check the Cool In Your Code site for more info on that.  And while on the subject of Long Island City, that neighborhood just debuted a new bar called Dutch Kills.  It seems like an interesting place to visit at least once.  Here's Time Out New York's take on it:

Dutch Kills
Sasha Petraske’s LIC cocktail lounge kills.

And last, but not lease is JHL's own thread discussing the local bar scene.  Here's a link to that thread:

^ This.

The other night started in Astoria, migrated to JH, and ended in Woodside.  It was all easily doable between 10pm and 5am
There are some diamonds in the rough.  Also some rough, which is a good change of pace.

I don't know what this finishing up at 11pm business is.  Weird.

My favorite bars in the area are Terazza Number 7 Train Bar and Cafe
and
Quays in nearby Astoria.

those are both top notch for me, and I'm not giving them special treatment b/c they are in the area.
T is probably the coolest bar I've been into.
Q is a lot of fun.

My 5am days are over.  I enjoy daytime drinking.
Thanks for all the info.  Once I move in I will have to do my own little bar crawl and see what's up :buck2:

Hello.

My name is Ignacio, and although I grew up in JH and have been living here again for the past ten years, I just now joined this group.  I am a public interest attorney working for Housing Works (you may have seen our thrift stores), and while I used to live in the Queen Anne building, I recently moved to the Griswold.
