Hi Jenn.  that's an interesting question.  I don't know the answer but I bet if you post it as a general question instead of here, more people will see it and maybe someone will know the answer.  Congratulations, BTW on your engagement.  this will be a nice Valentine's for you, I bet. ;-)

I'm not gonna lie and say there's much of a local scene but the local restaurants are great especially for the price.  try it sometime.  You might be surprised.

hello JHL community:

First time caller, long time listener... (well, ok, I posted once yesterday)

I've been in JH for a coupla years, after some migrant knowledge-culture industry work and am settling longterm in Queens-  hopefully JH but who knows. A cuny-based educator, writer, activist, lately I've been working to organize young people, esp. immigrant [read (for now) undocumented] students, generation 1.5, and the like. I know there are things going on here in the neighborhood, and I hope to get involved. If any of this seems interesting please drop me a line. My email is visible, so have a look at my profile to see how to reach me.

Thanks to the site admin and moderators for all they do to maintain this community.
I used to live as a Company Townie, but now I am living in Cupcake Town.

Hello! I just found this site and discovered the "any long time jackson heighters out there" thread.  I was born in the Heights and lived there for 41 years, until 12 years ago.

I'm getting nostalgic now hearing about all the places that I went to while growing up and as an adult.

I used to hang out at Northern Lanes bowling alley on 75th & Northern---we lived right behind the parking lot. My friends and I "owned" the place until it closed.

Used to work at the grandly named "Jackson Heights Institute for Music and Dancing" on 82nd Street between 37th & Roosevelt. I worked there when Larry Downes was a guitar instructor there, before he opened his own place on 37th Ave. I would love to get in touch with him again.

My brother owned "Arts 'n Flowers" florist on the corner of 81st and 37th. The whole family always helped out on the holidays and we got to know so many people in the area.

Went to PS 69, and then the first year of 6th grade ever at IS 145. That year there were 2 graduating classes at PS 69 - 6th graders and 5th graders. I felt like pioneer.

I've been checking out the google street views of the neighborhood and I'm astonished at all the changes.

Hope to be part of this community and maybe reconnect.

If this is a "hello" thread- I will say hello too.

I am Shelby2.   my grandmother graduated from Hunter College High in 1918, and I had a great aunt living in Elmhurst and another one living in Whitestone.

Wow. I graduated from Hunter College High too...A lot later though - 1973. Always fun taking the subway in 7th & 8th grades to the city with my Jackson Heights "buddies"
