The Omicron Variant
« on: December 02, 2021, 08:03:44 PM »
Anyone else waiting for a major newspaper to have an A1 headline, "SORRY FOR THE OMICRON BS"??

Why must the world financial markets and travel industry be upended by this overblown news? How many variants have there been? There are new variants all the time. And nobody is even getting very ill from this one. What gives?

we promise the death toll -- and long-haul toll -- will rise enough to make you happy.

the financial markets have nothing to do with the news. the 20 richest people in the world -- mostly outside the U.S. -- control those.

It's more like, cases and hospitalizations skyrocket in a few states recently.. that barely gets a blip in the news.. but some variant that hasn't been making anyone seriously ill makes for a world panic.

With the anti viral pills and vaccines available...plus everyone knows the drill by now...the world is definitely in a better position than we were during the dark tunnel of 2020.

So that's the positive.

Medical science has saved us.

I do think the numbers and the level of sickness don't warrant the restrictions with the current level of information available. But if this falls into the category of "with an abundance of caution" and certain decisions are made at this time that confuse us all, I'll go along. Everyone in my immediate and extended circle who has passed from Covid, or gotten really ill, has seen it progress very, very quickly so if this is the early response and it's tempered later, I'm ok with that. But your point is taken here.

"The financial markets have nothing to do with the news."

The financial markets most certainly reacted to the news.  Without question.

It appears that current vaccines are less resistant to to Omicron variant. Today's report from South Africa says that the Omicron may be 3 times more likely to create breakthrough infections  That is a cause for concern for public health officials and pharmaceutical companies that have been advocating the vaccines as the best solution for the pandemic. Investors who speculate on the market have to react on early news and public health officials may have to prepare alternative measures. It remains to be seen if this variant is more dangerous than others. So far it seems mild, but we'll need a few weeks to really judge its impact.

Sorry, it seems I misunderstood the report from South Africa.  It was referring to re-infections in particular, or people who had previously been infected, not vaccinated people.  The study was not peer reviewed.

CBS News has the story here: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/omicron-variant-covid-cases-reinfection-boosters-africa-vaccine-equity/

The spread of the Omicron variant only underscores the failure of the major Western countries, the US above all, to develop a strategy for eliminating this deadly virus worldwide. Instead, we are told we must learn to "live with COVID", i.e., to accept more than 1,000 people, 400,000 a year, dying from it, and no one knows how many contracting long Covid that will potentially affect them for the rest of their lives. If people in our neighborhood are still wearing masks outside, it is because they know so many people who died or were sickened by the virus. Please forgive them for not following your enlightened "science".

well said. imagine if we were told we must "learn to live with cancer" ... then again, there are those science-denierrs who claim that doesn't even exist, so......

But people and the world do live (and die of) cancer.

We have learned to live (and die) of it.

It's a fact of being human and being alive.

There is no real cure for cancer. Yet.

Blaming the USA or anyone for a disease is strange.

It's nature...and as yet mankind has not been able to completely control nature.

That's what COVID has proved.

But medical science has done a remarkable job to keep many diseases in check. Including COVID.

Still, nature remains more powerful than we are. Even more powerful than the USA!

And we do have to accept that. And live with it.

My medico pals are telling me that the initial data is Omicron is more infectious but the disease may be less severe.

This is great news. And follows the pattern of how the Spanish Flu of 1918 dissipated.

 Cancer isn't transmissible by respiration.

(.....cancer being mostly a thousand different non-transmissible diseases with a common mechanism of uncontrolled cell replication.)

Cancer isn't amenable to sensible programs of eradication with simple public health messages and actions....

....these messages and actions which have been undermined by ignoramuses and those that take advantage of them for profit and power.

Apologizing for the willful spreader of covid misinformation is "being on the side of the plague. "

If as a culture we had a spine and a brain we could have beaten covid with 1/10th of the death we have had.
 instead we have....looks around

Part of accepting nature is also accepting human nature.

Blaming human nature is strange.

There will always be folks who are wild cards...and not fall into line.

That's also part of being human and alive.

People, much like herding cats, are notoriously hard to control.

Obviously trying to control by negativity like shaming or shunning or whatever other tactics people use...simply doesn't work.

IMO maybe...a carrot rather than a stick COULD possibly be a better enlightened way to cajole folks. Rather than a sanctimonious approach. Maybe.
