"IMO maybe...a carrot rather than a stick COULD possibly be a better enlightened way to cajole folks. Rather than a sanctimonious approach. Maybe."

They've tried giving away money, lottery tickets, tickets to sporting events........the carrots haven't worked either.  Too many still refuse to get vaccinated.

Well, then we might have to accept that the seeds of humankind destruction are hard wired in our nature.

Just like the Science Fiction books tell us.

we learned that the first time we used nuclear weapons in a terrorist attack -- and remain open to doing that again.

Thank you for having the patience to argue with "common sense". China, with more than three times the US population has less than 5,000 recorded deaths, compared to more than 800,000 here. This is not to blame the American people, who have been fed lies, half-truths and anti-science backwardness, but rather those who are responsible. It is not "human nature" to destroy ourselves. It is the nature of a system that places profits over human lives. Whether it is this pandemic, the next one, climate change, or a nuclear war, as long as those interests determine public policy the prospects for humanity future are indeed grim.

 Cancer isn't transmissible by respiration.

(.....cancer being mostly a thousand different non-transmissible diseases with a common mechanism of uncontrolled cell replication.)

Cancer isn't amenable to sensible programs of eradication with simple public health messages and actions....

....these messages and actions which have been undermined by ignoramuses and those that take advantage of them for profit and power.

“All I can say is that on this earth there are plagues and there are victims, and as far as possible one should refuse to be on the side of the plague” - Camus

Apologizing for the willful spreader of covid misinformation is "being on the side of the plague. "

If as a culture we had a spine and a brain we could have beaten covid with 1/10th of the death we have had.
 instead we have....looks around

As well as everything else (including great stuff)...Human nature clearly encompasses putting profits first too.
It's all part of human nature.

That's why the Ancient Greek concept of "Balance" is the philosophy and ideology I admire most.

Covid is a medical issue.
The only sensible way to combat it is with science and medicine.
It is a threat and danger to all.
The more some make it a political issue or economic issue, the more chance it has to mutate into new strains. And that only serves to complicate eradicating it.

Covid doesn't care about your agendas.... it kills!

What a difference a couple of weeks made! In a most disturbing way, we have gone into a scary place once again. I am hearing that it is possible that in a couple of weeks this wave may have washed over us and leave. Good riddance.
  Be safe out there everyone!

Funny, I was just about to link to the NYT today:

https://www.nytimes.com/live/2021/12/22/world/omicron-covid-vaccine-tests/new-cases-slow-in-south-africa-suggesting-its-omicron-wave-may-have-peaked

Gotta love the NYT.. always a week or two behind the actual facts. Cases and hospitalizations been dropping like a stone for like.. a week? in South Africa. Literally plunging. Pfizer covid pill just got FDA approval. We're seeing a completely predictable (and predicted) winter Delta wave, the same one that already tore its way through the Midwest.

One thing is for sure though, the media will try to incite and create panic where none is needed. Another dumb headline in the Times said they spoke to "more than two dozen people" who are tired of Omicron. Um. Yeah. Stay smart, keep washing your hands, perhaps limit your indoor dining and activities and you'll see, this wave will peak and come down.

FYI: If anyone is interested in getting their (Moderna) booster shot a.s.a.p., you can simply walk to the subway station at Roosevelt Avenue/74th Street. No appointment is necessary.

Am watching the South African story closely and yes, it's almost half from a week ago with new
infections. My group of family and friends are being cautious but not shutting down and hopefully we can ride out this wave. The current news outlets definitely incite panic.

fear and overreaction has always been the American way. except when it comes to guns, which are soon to be inserted into the womb during pregnancy to guarantee infants can develop skills before heading off to day care.
