Can someone please fill us in about what happened to Espresso 77? Vandalized? I saw black boards go up. Then someone painted a nice mural on it. The boards came in because of vandalism and weren't preventative? I'm so near them and yet I heard nothing about this.

The glass door was broken about a week ago or so. Nothing was stolen, and no one had been inside. I don't know if it was vandalism or an accident but Afzal and Julie responded very promptly, boarding it up the next day and beautifying it with the gorgeous graffito.

The store fronts on 37th Ave. are all being boarded up.

This wasn't true an hour ago. I was on 37th and 75th through 79th and didn't see "all stores" being boarded up. In fact, didn't see any.

That may be the case now but wasn't true for the above blocks when the OP posted their original message.

Here’s an excerpt from one of Espresso 77’s emails from May 29th:

We had a bit of vandalism on Tuesday night, so we have secured the shop with some boards to keep her safe.  With some help from our friends and neighbors, we've turned lemons into a Honey Mint Limonata!

We really appreciate JH artist David Heatley for joining Afzal in mapping out the project, and big thanks go out to Aaron, Ariadna, Audra, August, Jonny, Nothon and Ursula for sharing their time and talent with us to make some beautiful art.

Some I saw boarded earlier today (and prompted me to check this site) on 82 Street: Skechers, Foot Locker, Banana Republic, Rite Aide... also a large group of police officers (maybe 6-8) on the corner of 37 Ave.  I would say this was around 12:30 p.m.  May peace prevail.

There are many store fronts boarded up from 74th St to 82nd. There are a group of young men in front of Food Dynasty who have signs saying Looters Go Home. They told me that they have other groups throughout JH and were determined not to let anyone destroy our community. I would guess they are Asian young men. They all look like weightlifters or linebackers certainly able to do whatever is necessary to protect JH. This is what it comes to when a feckless and incompetent Mayor is tough on funerals and all  talk when it comes to protecting lives and property.

Take a walk out of your comfort zone to the upper 80s, you will see almost every restaurant as well as some of the stores are in fact boarded up. just because you don’t see it, does it make it not true.

I just saw JH on the tv news. It showed some stores being boarded up.

It also showed the mayor and police commissioner saying that last night in the Bronx there was a "perceived threat." This resulted in a police crack down and people in the Bronx being attacked by the police.

We now have a "perceived threat." Maybe it is JH's turn.

there were none boarded up between 75th and 78th a couple of hours ago.

on the bright side, we'll have plenty of plywood if a climate-change spawned hurricane hits Queens this summer

You put perceived threat in quotes as though it came out of thin air. This threat alert came from Catalina Cruz and others https://www.facebook.com/CatalinaCruzNY/posts/783939152142178

If the threat is creditable then it requires a response to protect lives and property which is the primary responsibility of the police to preserve civil order. Is there an alternative?

Metal grates have all been pulled down.

Thankfully bunches of immigrant young men are on the look-out to stop any potential looters.

Certainly no BLACK LIVES MATTER protesters.

Only NO LOOTING vigilantes.

It's come to this.

I don' live in JH (but still from Queens), but I shop here all the time. Please keep everyone posted and bless the people who are out there protecting the neighborhood. It has come down to this - us having to fend for ourselves. Whether this is a hoax or not, still better safe than sorry. On FB, there's a post about rocks being planted at various points on Queens Blvd as 'marks' for looters. If you see any suspicious concrete rocks, inform the authority of the location.
