No, all the families who moved in starting 10-15 years ago are starting to have high schoolers. Our area sort of went through a 'fewer families' period in the 90s and early '00s, and now is back to a 'more families' period. There are 300,000 more people living in Queens than in 1990.

Is Newtown still considered a nightmarish, dystopian sinkhole school? My old conventional wisdom was that it consisted only of kids who either couldn't get into any other school, or kids whose families were in dire enough straits that they couldn't get it together to fill out the school application. But maybe that's changed?

It looks like the bigger version is happening. The corner already has a very overcrowded Q66 bus stop and a confusing crosslight. We can expect some serious accidents if they don't consider redesigning the Northern Blvd  - Broadway intersection as part of the site development.

Whelp, the city has released its design for our new high school, and wowza is it hideous:

It appears the city has decided to gift us with a massive blank wall exactly as ugly as the one it is replacing.  Perhaps this is some kind of misguided nod to "contextual design," I dunno.   But the neighborhood and our elected officials should demand that the city do better.  There need to be windows facing the street, and the building needs to be set back from the property line to allow for a wider sidewalk and trees.  This is a changing neighborhood, and more care needs to be taken to design it with pedestrians in mind.

That seriously looks like a prison. And even if that facade faces busy Northern Boulevard, you just know those walls will be covered with graffiti in no time. A total eyesore... the architect needs to be fired.
