Listen, now three of you are looking at the one spot.  First come, first serve.  I'm sorry I don't have others at this moment in my building but when you come, ask Sabrina (our Super in 1D) about the buildings next door to us.  We're close to those Board members and between us there are usually spots opening all the time.

When I reread my post, it sounded like I was being harsh.  And I wasn't.  Two people have sent me messages and one has called me about the spot.  I'm feeling guilty cuz I know there are several people who are now interested in this one spot.  Sorry if I came off rude sounding.  I think that's my guilt tone of voice ;-(  It was unintentional.

The smartest thing to do is get rid of your car and take mass transit. You can always rent a car when you need one.

I'm sitting here giggling because there's no way in hell I'm ever getting rid of my car.  I use it almost every day since I work for myself and am always going to different job sites.  Plus I loathe public transport.  Would rather stick sharp objects into my head than do that.  Sell my car! heheheheehehehehehehehee  cute!

I got the spot! Woohoo!

Unfortunately getting rid of my car is not an option, it would be prohibitively expensive for me to rent a car every time I need to go someplace not easily accessible by public transportation. I would love to be able to exist without my car, but alas, it is not to be.

OMG!  Barring anything drastic happening, we would never consider giving up our car.  Once you have one, you become incredibly spoiled and want to drive to places outside of the neighboring areas.  I don't mind using public transportation, but I reserve that for occasions when I'm going somewhere that's not generally considered a 2 or 3 fare zone.

the spot was taken by someone else on this thread.  There is one other spot across the street.  you can still see the Super at my building since we're all friendly and know each other.  Apt. 1D ask for Sabrina.  It will go as fast as the other one though just to warn you.

Buddy, how on earth did the Board convince the shareholders in your co-op to lease parking spaces in the garage to non-residents?  Is it that the vast majority of residents don't own cars?  I know that if our Board proposed that in my co-op, there would be a tremendous outcry.

This co-op has always been more "relaxed" than most others.  Even though I've been the Board President for about 15 years, over those years the other Board members have been comprised of Investors and Resident Shareholders so every one has a point of view that reflects what they want.  I would prefer that we have no Investor/Shareholders but I doubt that will ever change as long as some are on the Board. I have Shareholders who live in the building AND own apartments in the building that they rent out.   So our garage is also relaxed.  New Shareholders who have a car and want a spot in our garage, automatically go to the top of the Waiting list but we never evict anyone to give them a spot.  They get the next spot available.  If we have spots available and no shareholders or sublet tenants (plus we still have 11 original renters here) then anyone can rent a spot.  Spots come available regularly enough that it's never been a problem.  Amazing, huh?

Despite it maybe sounding like the building is a free for all - far from it.  We have historically had great people living here no matter their status.  So because of that, the status quo of how we run the building stays the same.  Most people are happy here and then there are always a few shareholders who are a pain in the a** and are never happy.  That's life.  Bottom line: we have a nice building to live in.  Not snooty.

Thanks for your response Buddy.  Our building is pretty relaxed as well, but even so, I can't ever see a time when we have not had enough residents  interested in leasing a parking space in the garage.  Our co-op maintains a rather lengthy waiting list, so any openings in the garage go to the next in line.  If that particular person doesn't own a car as of yet, then they are given a 30 day grace period to attain one.  If that doesn't happen, the space automatically goes to the next person on the list.  This plan seems to be working out well with all residents, as we haven't had any significant disputes to date.  My husband is also board president in our co-op, and he, along with his fellow board members have pretty much established a great avenue for communication between the Board and the shareholders.  As a result of this, most shareholders have voiced that they would prefer to keep the garage open only to residents.

Another spot is opening up in my building: 86-11 34th Street.  Possibly two.  Shareholders are moving and new people don't have cars.  If anyone is interested, PM me here. Rose

Need parking close to 35th Ave & 77th St
« Reply #29 on: April 20, 2008, 10:10:51 AM »
I just moved to Jackson Heights a few days ago and need a parking space close to 35th Ave and 77th St where I live.  I would rather have a spot in a garage building, but am willing to park behind a house in a driveway if it is within a couple of blocks of my apartment.

Thanks!
