Looking for a seamster/tailor
« on: December 04, 2007, 01:24:19 PM »
can someone please suggest a professional tailor in the area? I'm looking for someone with an eye for detail, not a cleaner with sewing machine.
I had a bad experience at JH tailors on 74th in Little India. On a pant hem, the guy wasn't even going to measure me until I demanded.

From my experience, the best tailor on 37th avenue seems to be the establishment on the corner of 80th street.  It's right across from Italian Farms.
I used to go to this other place in between 76th and 77th street on 37th avenue but I had an awful experience last time I went.  They charged 50 dollars for shoddy workmanship and merely cut the fabric straight across with NO OTHER alterations.  Something a mere child could do...and it was a $50 bill for 2 minutes of a poor performance.  I was passive and should have shown a backbone to not pay the bill...but I didn't want to risk losing the expensive article of clothing, although it was damaged. I was highly agitated and refuse to EVER go back there.

Recommendations for Seamster/Tailor to help us with curtains
« Reply #2 on: April 20, 2008, 10:40:06 PM »
We recently purchased some fabric for curtains for our bedroom but we need someone to do the sewing.

Does anyone have recommendations for an individual(s) that could help us sew the fabric into curtains (nothing fancy needed - just cut the fabric, make hems, etc. so we can hang them)? Thanks!

alterations/tailor for bridesmaid dresses
« Reply #3 on: August 02, 2008, 02:11:59 PM »
I have a bridesmaid dress I need altered slightly, and, as I have to wear it in a little over a month, I am hesitant to go to someone out of the phonebook.  I will need to give them specific instructions that can't be conveyed in hand motions (at the request of the bride) so they have to be pretty fluent in English.  Does anyone have a recommendation for bridal alterations?  The amount of time it took and price would also be helpful!  And I am pretty willing to schlep around Queens and Manhattan, so let JH not limit you.  Thanks so much!

Okay I am bumping this, because I cannot believe that a place with blocks full of fabric shops can't have SOMEONE who knows how to alter things!

believe it broad.  after living here for 20 years, I know I can't recommend anyone locally.  I don't go to Manhattan often so I can't help there either.

Have you tried the astorians site?  It's much larger and you might have better luck.
First, do no harm.

You might want to inquire at Kayani Uomo (74-03 37th Avenue).  I have bought some items there and found them easy to work with.  I don't know if they do tailoring, but they may be able to make an informed recommendation.

If one does not mind a trip to Astoria I know a wonderful seamstress her establishment is simply called Tailor Shop 30-94 36th Street  (718) 956-4064.  She altered two men's suits and a formal dress for me and did an amazing job.  She is courteous, accommodating and reasonable.  You can take the "N" train to 30th Ave. stop and walk east on 30th Ave. and make a right on 36th Street.  Afterwards walk over to Rizzo's Pizza (30-10 Steinway Street) for the BEST square, thin crust pizza around or Zenon Taverna (34-10 31st Ave.) for wonderfully tasty Cypriot food.....try the hot and cold sampler! ;)
One day your life will flash before your eyes. Make sure its worth watching.

Help! My seamstress disappeared.
« Reply #9 on: November 28, 2008, 07:48:30 PM »
I am trying to locate a seamstress I've been using for several years. Her name is Elizabeth and she worked out of her apt on 75th St off 37th Ave. Her phone has been disconnected and there's no answer when I've stopped by and rang her buzzer.

Does anyone know her and have her current contact info? She did amazing tailoring. She could drastically alter a pair of jeans to fit me and you could never tell they were altered!

I feel like she's irreplaceable!  :-\

As someone new to the neighborhood, I was hopeful that I could find a good tailor nearby, especially since there are so many stores that sell fabric for men's shirting and suits. I inquired at a couple these shops and they recommended I find a place in Manhattan.

I'm not giving up the search. I have an unlined duffel coat I would like to have lined, as well as have some custom shirts made.

There's a great seamstress on 37th btwn 84th & 85th on the south side of the street next  to the bagel shop.

Do NOT go to the French cleaners on 80th & 37th - they do poor work and are over priced.
