I need to have a pair of jeans hemmed.  Is that a good idea or not?  Most hemmed jeans I've seen don't look very good, so I'm not sure it's possible to find a local tailor that can create a hem that looks original to the pants.  In other words, I don't want obviously hemmed jeans.  Any recommendations?

The cleaner/tailor on the north side of 80th and 37th Ave. has done a very nice job on 2 pairs of jeans for me.  They match the color of the original thread (usually yellow or gold) and also match the distance between the original bottom of the jeans to where the thread is.
I don't think there's any way to tell on mine that they have ever been hemmed.  Should cost $7 to $8.

Thanks Shelby2!  Do you think I can take a pair of jeans with my ideal length so they can just match them up, or will I have to try them on at the store?

To be on the safe side, you should put them on.  Either try them on at home and mark the length with a safety pin, or try them on at the tailor's.  Don't forget to put on the shoes/boots that you think you will be wearing them with most, as that can make a difference in the length too.

French Cleaners (80th/37th) also does a great job patching jeans.  A pair I thought I would have to throw away is now perfect again.

I'm bumping this up for a current recommendation, as the only rec from this year relates to jeans.

I am looking for a tailor who can alter pencil skirts I have (make the waist a little smaller and bring the hem up--nothing major) and to repair a tear on the seam of a dress.

I only speak English, so I need someone I can communicate with.  Can anyone recommend someone in the area?  I'd prefer walking distance JH or Woodside, but I can go elsewhere (preferably in Queens) if necessary.

I recently came across this site for:

Deb in The City

According to her website, she does alterations at home in Woodside and also does housecalls.  Has anyone ever tried her?

I mentioned this in an earlier post ...
If one does not mind a trip to Astoria I know a wonderful seamstress her establishment is simply called Tailor Shop 30-94 36th Street  (718) 956-4064.  She altered two men's suits and a formal dress for me and did an amazing job.  She is courteous, accommodating and reasonable.  You can take the "N" train to 30th Ave.  and btw she speaks english,

I looked at Deb's website, and the prices seem high, but maybe I just don't know.  Do people really pay $25 to get their jeans hemmed?

How much does it typically cost to alter something?  For example, how much would it normally cost to hem one pencil skirt and take the waist in a little?

Shelby2 posted the following a while back about hemming work on jeans.  So, $25 does look to be quite expensive.

I can't imagine paying more than $12.00 for hemming a pair of jeans!

Oh,good--then I'm glad those prices are way off! Because according to Deb's website, the work needed on 1 skirt would be $50 ($25 to take the hem up, $25 to bring the waist in).  I have 4 skirts I need this done to, and I am not looking to spend $200 to do this!  For that, I could probably find new skirts on sale instead.

Thanks, Griswold--I will check out Tailor Shop today for alterations.

FYI--I went to Tailor Shop today, and the woman there is very nice.  Prices for the work to be done on my skirts ranged from $18 to $25, and the ripped seam on my dress will cost $7.  I'll report back regarding the quality of work when I receive my items back.  Thanks for the suggestion!
