I really go into brain warp when I read all of these threads:  What we need, what we deserve, what we don't have, why can't this be more like wherever

Did you not tour the neighborhood before you moved in?
Were you blindfolded and forced to sign a lease/contract at gunpoint?

If you want Brooklyn Bars..go to Brooklyn.
If you want NYSC go to Manhattan.

Stop whining and deal with reality.

Who's coming up with the money for the wine bar you'll be an infrequent customer to?

Who's paying the rent and salaries for the coffee house while you spend the whole day there on your laptop or reading?

Cough up some money or find someone who can.

Until then, give me a beak!

I can tell you that two people are currently considering putting serious money into a modern American restaurant in Jackson Heights and that if it happens the chef/owner will be someone who has worked in a number of Michelin starred restaurants and who lives in Jackson Heights.

One of the things that the investors are doing is evaluating potential support, and as part of that we have been reading recent threads on this forum with great interest.

The message from this thread, and the contemporaneous thread "Why Do You Leave the Neighborhood?", is that nobody in his right mind would attempt anything here beyond a gastropub that sells decent burgers.

This is sobering, but we are currently engaged in very active negotiations for space and deciding how much weight to give posts on this forum.

If you want NYSC go to Manhattan.

There are NYSC branches in Sunnyside, Rego Park, Astoria, Forest Hills, Whitestone and Glendale.  When I go to the Rego Park NYSC branch, I hear even more languages spoken there than I hear on the streets of Jackson Heights.  It's not like NYSC is only for "Manhattan" people.  It's for people who want a decent and not horribly overcrowded place to keep fit.  It is really not asking too much to have one nice gym in the neighborhood.

This is highly likely to happen. We'd be honored if you come to the pre-public opening. Send me a note.

Hey Shelby, you too.

That's it. Time to put this together and otherwise shut up.

i fail to see how pointing out the actual demographics of Jackson Heights -- and not the two socio economically (not racially/ethnically) homogenous websites that serve a small percentage of its residents -- qualifies as "lowered expectations."

I was born here, I like my neighborhood, but I have opinions of things I would rather see than a pharmacy, bank branch, and multiple discount stores on each block. Would you rather I move, shut up or do both?

That's one opinion.  There are others.

Here is a very interesting piece on the rise of "fast casual" chains vs traditional fast food. Food for thought re: our efforts to attract Bareburger, et al.

Redge: this is GREAT news! I am also one of your first customers. We have been organizing a group to see what we can do to attract some more varied dining options to JH, which many of us believe definitely can support more restaurants that are not the ubiquitous formica tables, plastic trays, fluorescent lighting, Coke machine and wall-mounted TV places. Those are great to have, too, but there are lots of people in JH who would love to have a nice place for drinks, more sit-down dining options including American/European/Italian, a nice bistro, even a good burger place or pub that was not a sports bar. I and others have pointed out that some of the South American restaurants already here seem to be always packed and are NOT cheap at all. Why wouldn't some of those customers also support other options?  There is stereotype that this is a neighborhood for poor immigrants and yes, maybe there are a few more affluent people here, but basically this is a cheap food only neighborhood because that's all the neighborhood can support. I disagree. I think (as many have also pointed out) that the main issue preventing JH from having more/better retail and dining options is very high commercial rents, higher than in Bed-Stuy or wherever. Not sure why that is the case. The people who seem to want the neighborhood to remain frozen in time and think everyone should shut up and just leave the neighborhood if they want a good gym or a bistro meal--well, I just totally disagree with that notion.

Redge - I want to add another voice of strong support.
As the poster who, I think, initially mentioned gastropub I should clarify... I was thinking along the lines of The Spotted Pig, or Walters. Cozy places that serve creative cuisine, as well as napkin worthy burgers. And well made drinks. And don't have tv's playing sports. So that's what I meant by gastropub. But I would also be bery happy to see an innovative, more upscale place in walking distance. I'm sure a lot of people on this forum and off would agree!
