Diners / Coffee Shops
« on: January 16, 2008, 06:30:59 PM »
I seem to have noticed that many people prefer Ricky's Cafe on 75th and 37th Ave. over City Coffee Shop, across from PS 69.  Aren't these establishments your typical, run of the mill coffee shop?  I have visited both, but since City is closer to my apartment, I have to admit that I stop by City more often.  Some of my neighbors have even expressed a preference for Ricky's.  Anyone wish to enlighten me?   ???

I personally like both, City for breakfast and Rickys for lunch/dinner. I think that Rickys has more "exotic dishes" if you will. City, although they have some decent Mexican dishes, tends to be on the mundane side. Rickys mixes it up more.

I agree with Kate. I like City for breakfast (fresh oj) and Ricky's for the rest.

What I like at Ricky's: Rice and black beans, Chicken Romano, chopped salad, chicken salad (very fresh).

Thanks for the responses.  I tend to do breakfast more often than other meals at both of these places, but on a few occasions I have ordered the burger at City.  It's huge and the fries taste fresh, not from frozen.  I have noticed that during the evening hours, City seems to attract a few of the people from the classic character list mentioned in another post.

if we're going to talk "diners", which is really what ricky's and city cafe are...don't forget the Mark Twain Diner, JH's own typical Greek diner, on 73rd and Northern.

It's been good to me for the last 9 years.

I like Mark Twain as well. Seems it's been around forever. I think though it's more standard diner fare than Rickys or CC.

Yes, I agree...Mark Twain definitely has more standard fare, but it's a diner...it has diner food.

truth be told, since both City Coffee and Ricky's have a "latino" flare to their food...I would rather just go to one of the fantabulous dedicated ethnic restaurants in our hood or even a taco cart then settle for the mediocre special of the day at Ricky's...

just my preference.

I stopped by the Mark Twain Diner about 2 weeks ago...this after a long hiatus for no specific reason.  This place has changed so much over the years.  Maybe it's just that I hadn't been there in so long, but everything looked so dirty.  Even the pattern on the carpeting was barely discernible under all the layers of dirt.   It's time for a clean-up.  Excluding us, there were only 2 or 3 other couples dining.

Meli, I agree with you in that I would not consider ordering beans and such in either Ricky's or City.  Breakfast and the occasional burger suits me just fine.  I don't know if you're into burgers, but the basic cheeseburger at City knocks the socks off of Mark Twain's!   ;)

Of all the diners, Jackson House on 37th Ave between 82nd & 83rd has the best food and friendliest staff.  I think it's much better then Jahn's and it's also one of the most packed diners around.

I have not been to Jackson House in ages, probably 2 or 3 years ago. Usually breakfast for me. I am absolutely in love with cafe 89, which has nice breakfast wraps. I think I will try JH just to see how it is these days.

Since this post is talking diners, I noticed there's no mention of Jackson Hole over on Astoria Blvd.  This is a diner, right?  I enjoy the breakfasts there as well.  Not a huge fan of the burgers though.  Much too big in my opinion.

What is it about diners/coffee shops that brings everyone together?  During breakfast earlier today, I happened to notice the place was full of people from all walks of life, many ethnicities, assorted age groups, etc.  I guess everyone likes ham and eggs...fruit plates for you non-meat/dairy eaters!  ;D

Ricky's doesn't take cards, though they do have an excellent pork sandwich.  They have a more limited menu.  Also, though I love the people at City, I have never gotten out of there without them making a major, major mistake.

i kind of prefer city coffee over rickys. part of the reason being that my families close with the owner and its right around the corner from my house. i do like ricky's club sandwiches though but, doesnt it seem strange that each time it burned down they would renovate it and make new changes? insurance fraud? maybe not. oh man, the Jackson Hole! I havent been there in a while. I've actually been talking about it a lot lately. Maybe its time to go down there get a humongous burger and play bad music on the jukebox.

I haven't been to any of the coffee shops in this area for ages.  But I do manage to go the Mark Twain at least once a month.  When I first moved here, I frequented the Jackson House but hated the canned veggies.  Next it was Jahn's.  I though they were a little better.  I went to Ricky's just once.  Long time ago.  Had one mediocre meal and never went back.  Those three experiences soured me on trying City or any others like that.  But it's been such a long time maybe they've gotten better.  I normally go to one of the bagel shops when I want breakfast and get egg/bacon sandwiches on the run.  I have an old fashioned definition for what I call a diner... it's a building standing by itself with a parking lot.  Maybe cuz I grew up in Jersey. So Ricky's and City and Jahn's are not diners to my mind.  Although they do have diner food.  So now what is diner food?  Breakfast, burgers, other food, salads, sandwiches???  I think I need John Prester's help.   The Georgia diner is pretty famous as far as diners go and fits my definition of stand alone building and parking lot.
First, do no harm.

Buddy, I spent many weekends hanging out at the Georgia diner with friends. We'd order the chicken parmagian and for dessert our selection was always the apple pie a la mode.  I had an iron stomach in my earlier days!
