Sorry, I have to say that the Mark Twain Diner is really really disgusting.  The wait staff looks like they haven't bathed in the last ten years.  We no longer go there. lol

Oh, it wasn't the usual gross Williamsburg Hipster grunge.  ;)  And it wasn't just the waitstaff that was disgusting.  But if you're into that sorta thing, enjoy!

the stop inn is so wonderful. and yes, that burger is superb! they also make really good cole slaw, and offer a big portion on the burger deluxe platter. ooh, and the veggies on their dinner meals are actually cooked from scratch! the turnips alone get me coming back in the winter!

The Mark Twain has definitely seen better days.  It used to be a very good diner in the 80's but started going downhill in the 90's and I would never eat anything other than breakfast there.  I'm not sure if anyone remembers that a tuxedo executive was kidnapped in their parking lot in the early 90's and held captive for about two weeks in a dirt hole on the side of the west side highway.  It was front page news.

Here's a link to a 1993 New York Times article on what eddiestjohns posted above:

Kidnapped Executive Is Rescued After 13 Days in Manhattan Crypt

BTW, Mr. Weinstien, the kidnap victim, died in 2007.  From The New York Times:

Harvey Weinstein, 82, Kidnapping Victim Who Kept His Cool, Dies

Wow, amazing story.  Guess the Law and Order writers never had to work too hard with these kinds of things going on in the city!

I refuse to eat at Mark Twain Diner now. I used to like the fact that I could get a blt or cheeseburger and onion rings delivered really late (I work as a line cook in Manhattan, so I have weird hours). One night I ordered a "spinach salad". When it was delivered, I realized they had confused my order. I called up and instead of sending a new one, the guy on the phone made it seem like it was my fault and was extremely rude. Working in the restaurant industry, I'm used to better customer service and was appalled at how he handled the situation. They obviously do not care about customer service. Mark Twain Diner is on "My List".

Ricky's--meh, unimpressed
City Coffee--they may wait on you but you "wait" on them
Jahn's--they refill coffee well, food ok
Jackson Hole -- decent
Mark Twain -- awful service and WAY overpriced
Will try Jackson House, I never have.  Thanks for the recommend.
Best,
Masala Mama

I have always thought that CITY COFFEE on 37th Ave between 77th and 78th Street, next to Lemon Farm... would make an AWESOME cafe...without too massive a shake-up...

At the moment it looks very uninviting...stuck in some 1983 time warp...(and not interesting 80's let me add)...And I have never even been tempted to go inside... But they definitely have the space and resources (and perfect location) there...to create something enticing and very popular. Someone even told me their food is ok.  Is that right?

Jeffsayyes...go in and give them some advice...

city coffee serves up good, slightly above average, diner food. the burgers are actually worth stopping in for. they do a "mexican" one that's incredibly messy but tasty. and i have a soft spot for old fashioned turkey (or roast beef) dinners with gravy and mashed potatoes. the turkey is actually from a bird, the potatoes from potatoes and the gravy not too bad. same turkey on the club sandwich.

not a gold star, destination place, but there are times when one (if one is me) wants simple comfort food, middle american style.

Since you go into City Coffee....Dssjh....perhaps you can suggest to them that they update their decor.  To make their establishment more enticing. At the moment it screams..."doesn't give two hoots about atmosphere". And atmosphere, as well as good food, is imperative in getting new customers through the front door.

I have to agree regarding city coffee. I've been there several times for brunch and I've had some mixed experiences with the servers, with some being slow and a bit on the cranky side. That, coupled with the aged decor and that many times when I walk past there is one maybe two tables occupied at best, doesn't inspire me to return very often.

The Decour plus the lack of  customers give  me the feeling that the food isn't that fresh. I know it may be in my mind, but image is important.

I think it is popular with some of JH's older residemts.  i have also seen Jose Peralta and Danny Dromm there.

i'm not a "regular," but i could pass on the message, sure. it never bothered me all that much...outdated surroundings never put me off of a dining establishment, i guess. dirt and dinginess, yes, but not mere age.
