Pets and Animals / Re: Any Pet Recommendations?
« on: July 30, 2011, 01:35:45 PM »
I'm allergic to cats and dogs but found a toy poodle is ok.  I've had mine going on 4 years now without any problems allergy wise.

As you can tell from the above posts, all pets are work and require time, energy and hate to be alone for long periods.   Research carefully before you get anything.  There are tons of websites devoted to almost any pet where you can learn the pros and cons along with cost to own.

Good luck.  I will say that having my little dog has added more benefits to my life then opposite.

$50 is very reasonable, I think.  And I'd NEVER remove something like that myself.  Who knows if it would bleed a lot or cause pain or worse, get infected.   I'm glad you went to the vet and had it taken care of.  Better for both of you.   :)

And I like Dr. Riehle a lot, too.  My little dog has been sneezing, sniffling, snorting for about 2 weeks.  Took him to JHs Vet. Hospital and Dr. Riehle examined him and gave us some meds.  I already notice improvement.

Shelby, most of the time when I get empanadas I feel like I'm really buying them for that delicious green hot sauce.

Mary Poppins, that's true.  Friday, with the temp over 100, my living room was kept around 82 and with the fans going it actually was cool feeling.   I can't sleep if the temp is too low.

Summer or Winter, I want to be comfortable but not in any extreme degrees.  At work we have to wear sweaters and sometimes we're still cold.  That's just silly.

I do most of my own gardening but when i've needed help, I usually go to Craigslist.  There are aways people posting.  It's worth a try.

Bella, on Ditmars in Astoria is a really nice pizzeria/Italian restaurant with a room for parties.  No dance floor though.  The food is really good and there are two parking levels: street and below where the Matrix gym is.

I love ceiling fans.  Have one in each bedroom.  They make a huge difference in temperature.  I like how air conditioners help reduce humidity.  Having fans on around the house mean the air conditioner can be a size smaller BTU wise, kept on a temp around 79 and i feel comfortable without feeling too cold.   I don't like when rooms are too chilled.

Yeah, a good fan makes a big difference.

When I first moved here, I put up those heavy, lined drapes like hotels use.  They helped with both noise and light.  Eventually I put an overhead fan/light up and replaced the drapes with blinds and sleep okay.  Maybe you get use to your environment after awhile.

Superclam, I've already posted this on the Pizza thread:   I go to Porto Bello in Astoria on Ditmars (43-18 Ditmars Blvd).  Fantastic pizza.    Also their food is really good and not expensive.  Plus there's two parking lots: outside and underground FREE.

So worth the ride if you have a car.  I've never checked if they deliver but I doubt they'd come this far.

So after a lot of time, energy and expense we got our bedbugs under control.  The good thing is that now most of the residents of the co-op have taken steps to detect bedbugs quicker from using the climb ups to covering their mattress/box springs with the protective encasements and many of them vacuumed every day with a bit of talc powder which is a great way to remove/kill bugs or eggs.

It's not easy because of the amount of time and energy you have to expend dealing with them but hiring a pest mgmt company that is experienced in the matter helped a lot.  When I hear someone say "oh we thought we had bed bugs but the Super came and checked and said we don't", I wanna cry for their naivete.

Anyone on the Board of their Co-op should get the free copies, in English and Spanish, from the Dept of Health on bed bugs.  They're very well done.

My daughter is always giving me a flower from the gardens as we pass them on our way to and from home.  I am so touched that I don't have time to think about anything other than the flower, the big kiss and hug that she gives me. Sorry if anyone is offended.

Best,

As someone who spent years and a lot of money putting together my co-op garden, I have to say that is the lamest excuse for bad behavior I've heard in awhile.  Teach your daughter manners. And I am absolutely offended by the lack of respect for other's property.

FoxyWiles here's just one article on how to give food to homeless people:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/christine-schanes/food-for-thought-the-char_b_178426.html

There are others if you search online.  You seem well intentioned but you do come off a bit
naive and uninformed with your comments on what people should do with food they purchase and then choose not to eat.   Most organizations that help the homeless do not suggest giving homeless people your unwanted food.  Kinda rude actually.
