Restaurants & Food / Re: The new Arunee Thai
« on: January 30, 2014, 08:45:56 PM »
I went with a friend Sunday night.  The place was jammed.  As people finished and got up, the tables were taken by new people.  For the posts about service:  I don't think they ever expected to be so damn busy.  The food took awhile to come but when it did the portions were large and the food was great.   I asked our waiter if they were surprised by how busy they were and he said yes, they needed to hire more people in the kitchen.

The food was always a big plus to me at the original location so that hadn't changed. I would say the interior was completely unexpected and I loved it.

I can't wait to see the new place.  I've always liked their food but thought they could be a bit more attractive inside.  Will try to eat there soon and check it out.

I went yesterday.  Loved it.  Think it's a great addition to the neighborhood with lots of organic and green products.   I usually have to go to several stores to buy everything and now can shop in one place.  Didn't price compare because I was too excited but if I notice things are much more money (never shopped at C-Town, but in general) I would just tell the owner that if he's not competitive, he'll lose out on those purchases. Simple.

Also, besides having so much organic produce -- (I bought red kale … yay) -- I thought it was clean, bright and attractively styled.   Very happy to have this new store.

Bumping this up because I have friends coming in for the weekend and was just looking thru trip advisor for recommendations.  Would love to hear if anyone has further info on places to stay in the area.

A few years ago two people climbed our Co-op fence, dug up a small apple blossom tree, lifted it over the fence and then were arrested by two undercover officers who just happened to be sitting in a car across the street watching the whole thing.

The officers woke the Super and asked how much the tree was worth, explaining that anything over a certain price (think it was $350) was a crime people get arrested for.  Naturally my Super said that was the worth of the tree.

Off to jail.

So yes, there are people who will dig up and steal shrubs and trees.  It is sad.

Restaurants & Food / Dive Bars in Queens
« on: June 20, 2012, 08:10:02 AM »
Yelp just posted favorite Queens Dive Bars.  Ready Penny gets listed for JHs.  I highlighted the closest bars:

Starting out in Sunnyside, Elizabeth K is stoked over The Gaslight's three drinks for $10 happy hour deal: "Our friends ordered a pizza from down the block, which made it feel more like a gathering in someone's backyard rather than a night out at the bar." Out in Flushing, "$20 can go a long, long way" at Cheap Shots, according to Brittany A, who recommends the "Tequila Slammer, or 'XTC'," one of the many "silly names they have for drinks and shots." Over in Rockaway Park, Brandon Z checks for quality assurance at Rogers Irish Tavern: "No-nonsense, heavily accented bartender? Check. 'No Sniveling' sign? Check. Heck, they even have Anchor Steam on draft." Fancy (kinda)!

Drinking of course leads to drunchies, so though they have an "amazing selection of beers" at Astoria's Mad Donkey, Dena A cautions, "If you have an allergy to peanuts," be warned – "they're everywhere!" But if you're feeling brave, anaphylaxis-prone Yelpers, their bar nachos are "on point." Konstantin I has found a true dive in Ridgewood's Caskey's Tavern, where one can enjoy "microwaveable pizzas and free shuffleboard," while Elsie W is in a state of confusion at Sheehan's in Flushing over their 35 cent Jamaican wings: "I don't understand how we paid $10 for four half-half plates of wings and like 1000 pitchers." Well, "maybe not 1000, but it was pretty close."

For inebriates those who can't stop wailing once they've had a few, Stephanie S points to the jukebox at Kelly's in Astoria. "It's got all the staples for a good time drinking: Crüe, G 'n R, and tons of other great rock 'n roll bands," you party animals. Rebecca C prefers the "darts and pool table" at Jackson Heights' Ready Penny Inn, a "fantastic dive bar in the middle of Little India," and Whitestone's Stone Tavern impressed Alyssa F with their "hightop tables," multiple TVs, and stand alone shuffleboard: "Me and my friends played for hours!" Bukowski, drink your heart out!

I know this thread is old but I finally got here form a quick lunch: toasted bialy with tuna salad.  It is cute in an old fashioned way (meaning the rag washed painted walls) but I like it because at least it has a personality and is not another sterile looking coffee shop.  Between E77 and this, it's nice to have choices.

Plus guy behind the counter is very nice.

Had Ming Wok for the 1st time in ages.  Not as good as I remembered it.  My moo-shu pork tasted too salty.  That's a first even with soy sauce, it never tasted too salty.  And the spare ribs are not meaty enough.  Oh well.

I like it.  Food is good, portions are large.  Their omelets are monstrous.  Almost border on the obscene they're so huge.  But I do love left overs. (I always end up taking food home)  Service is fast and friendly.   And I think the reno looks nice.

Louis, your slide show of jumpers is SO INCREDIBLY OFFENSIVE.  Every magazine, newspaper in THIS country decided NOT to post these photos because of their horror and sensationalism, but mostly their horror.  And here you are posting them.

That makes you a very attention needy ass in my book. rose
