Neighborhood Chat / Re: Waxing?

I love Jolla at Shear Success.  She used to own Esthetiques and when the rent got too high, she moved to Shear Success with Assia.  They're both terrific.  Jolla is deaf but reads lips.  Shear Success is not as nice looking as I'd like but Jolla and Assia do great waxing, mani/pedis, Jolla gives really good inexpensive facials etc.  On 37th Ave. about 85th Street.

I just renovated my kitchen.  It was a nightmare.  I fired the first contractor and had to hire a new one plus an electrician to redo the contractor's electrical work.  But now that it's done I can say I was happy with the licensed electrician, the granite installer and the guy who did my hard wood floors.  And the second contractor did a good job considering he had to redo a lot of the first guys work which I think is always more difficult than starting from scratch.  I have to stress that a year ago I had my floors done based on my best friends recommendation and I thought those people did a horrible job.  The point I'm making is this: sometimes it doesn't matter if your friends loved or hated them... the job they do for you is all that matters.

Electrician: Pete 347-539-6986
floor guy: Cary  347-219-1719
granite installer: Caesar 646-235-4669 (he has the worst voice mail recording EVER... don't be put off by it... he sounds like an idiot but he's really a great granite guy and very honest.
Tiles:  I only go to Nemo tiles in Jamaica although there's International Tile over on 21st in Astoria.
Second contractor: Esad 917-674-0434

First contractor's name was Sadok.  He's Israeli (I only say this as a reference point in case any one ever comes across him... RUN FROM HIM!  He's a nightmare.)

Restaurants & Food / Re: Top 5 restaurants in JH

The salmon at Armondo's is always well prepared.  Like their gnoochi too.  Over on 37th Ave. by 60t Street is Saporo di Ischia (not sure of correct spelling).  A really good, interesting Italian restaurant that is an Italian deli during the day.  It also has a separate bar.  Good home made pasta dishes and great wine by the glass.  I like Arunee for Thai better than Sripraphai although when the weather is warm I love Sripraphai's back yard garden to have dinner in.

Since moving to Queens, we've been searching for some one close by to board our cocker spaniel, and this would be an excellent resource.  They carried some excellent brands of food, like wellness, science diet etc. You might want to check them out to get some ideas.

On 58th Street off Roosevelt Ave. is Rainbow Pet Spa and store.  Fabulous place with good quality food, supplies etc.  I go there for my poodle's grooming etc.

On 86th Street off Northern Blvd. is a tiny pet store with a small grooming room that's always busy.  I go there to buy Wellness cuz it's cheaper than Rainbow but Rainbow is where I get most everything else.  Here's there website.  And I am not in anyway affiliated with them.  My Vet, Heights Veterinary Hospital had a card up and I went and checked them out and liked them.

Neighborhood Chat / Re: Why do you live in Jackson Heights?
« on: February 11, 2008, 08:18:55 PM »
I moved here initially for two reasons:  gardens EVERYWHERE and easy parking because of the abundance of parking garages in Co-ops (unlike Brooklyn where there's hardly any garages).  Then I realized the architecture is like the Upper West side, the food is ethnically diverse and delicious and affordable.  It's conveniently/centrally located so if you're a car person you can jump on any one of a half dozen parkways and take off.  I love it here.   I've  been living here since 1987 and have friends slowly moving into the neighborhood.  And I'm looking forward to a Starbucks. I don't think it will hurt anything and if I live here another 20 years I will not understand those who think it will.

Community Trade and Classifieds / Re: Garage Spots
« on: February 11, 2008, 08:06:53 PM »
My building has a spot available.  86-11 34th Ave., entrance on 86th Street.  $175 a month (plus security deposit) plus one time fee for electric garage door opener.

I'm the co-op president and we usually don't have a spot since there's usually a waiting list.  This is a rare occurrence.
